An Evening for CTREE

The Center for Therapeutic Riding of the East End, which offers riding opportunities to children and adults with cognitive, physical, or emotional disabilities, will begin its 10th anniversary celebration at the Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. Horses Changing Lives will be an evening of cocktails and hors d’oeuvres with a 1970s theme.

Signs of Improvement, but Algal Bloom Persists in Fort Pond

Bacteria levels continued to drop at some Concerned Citizens of Montauk testing sites this week thanks to drier weather earlier in the week, but harmful blue-green algae continue to affect Fort Pond. Testing results for the week showed a bloom only at the southern end of the pond; concentrations at the north end dropped below the State Department of Environmental Conservation's threshold for harmful blooms but remain at high risk. To be safe, people are still urged to avoid contact with the water until further notice.

CBD, for the Dogs — and the Dollars

As crowds swarm in for a beautiful East End respite, the cannabis craze accompanies them.

It starts on Saturday when Mandala Yoga in Amagansett hosts a launch of CBD-infused pet treats made by the Alchemist’s Kitchen. The next night, the Hampton Cannabis Expo will feature panel discussions about the future of cannabis and an open bar at The Clubhouse in Wainscott.

CBD, a non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant, is legal as an oil, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved it as an additive to foods meant for human consumption.

A Drive Calls for Food and Household Donations

New York State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr. is hosting a food drive for the month of August, teaming up with Island Harvest, a hunger-relief organization, to collect food for those in need. Items collected on the South Fork will go to the Bridgehampton and Southampton food pantries.

Music All Over Montauk This Week

Music for Montauk will kick off its summer series of outdoor concerts Thursday with “Brahms Gypsy Dances,” passionate quartet songs, accompanied by piano and strings, under a tent at Third House at Montauk County Park.

On Aug. 17 the selection will be Bach’s most festive Cantata No. 51, featuring strings, trumpet, keyboard, and vocals, with the operatic star Rachelle Durkin and trumpeter C.J. Camerieri. Both concerts, at 6:30 p.m., are free and family friendly. Concertgoers are encouraged to take picnics, chairs, and blankets.

Get Ready to Shuck at the Fisherman’s Fair

The Springs Improvement Society’s 87th annual Fisherman’s Fair will take place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Ashawagh Hall grounds, with a children’s area for games and crafts, food and craft vendors, a restaurant raffle, live music, and, inside the hall, the Artists of the Springs invitational exhibition, which will be on view through Sunday.

Sherrilyn Ifill, the president and director-counsel of the N.A.A.C.P. Legal Defense and Educational Fund, will discuss matters of race and equality on the South Fork at 6 p.m. on Wednesday as part of the Thinking Forward Lecture Series at Guild Hall.

The free talk is in partnership with the Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center.

Harmful Algal Bloom Persists in Fort Pond

A harmful blue-green algal, or cyanobacteria, bloom continues to affect Fort Pond, according Concerned Citizens of Montauk's water testing results for the week of July 29. While toxin levels remain low, C.C.O.M. has again urged people to avoid contact with the water until further notice. 

Those who do come in contact with the water are advised to rinse immediately with clean water and seek medical attention if they experience nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea; skin, eye, or throat irritation, or allergic reactions or breathing difficulties after contact.

National Guard Band, Talks, and Birds at Montauk Lighthouse

The 42nd Infantry Division Band of the New York Army National Guard will perform at the Montauk Lighthouse on Monday at 2 p.m. The 90-minute show will feature a 28-piece band performing jazz, rock, and patriotic songs.

The Ocean Institute's series of free lectures at the Lighthouse with speakers from the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences continues today at 2 p.m. Teresa Schwemmer will discuss "Ocean Acidification: What Does It Mean for Long Island?"

Dynamic Works Come Together in Tabula Rasa, Watermill Center's Summer Benefit and Auction

The Watermill Center showed off an eclectic installment on Saturday night at the center’s annual benefit and auction, an "enchanted forest and performance art extravaganza" that featured works by more than 30 international artists. This year’s event was titled Tabula Rasa, or “clean slate,” a theme centered on evoking a mind-set absent of preconceived ideas. Two New Birth Circles Established

The nonprofit East End Birth Network has launched two new birth circles. Grupo de Nacimiento, a collaboration with the Children’s Museum of the East End in Bridgehampton, where it met for the first time on July 11, is a monthly support group for parents and the first Spanish-speaking Birth Circle on Long Island.

Guild Hall Returns to Community With the Clothesline Art Sale

Some museum galleries downplay local artists, but not Guild Hall in East Hampton. Now in its 73rd year, its Clothesline Art Sale will host the work of 400 artists — most of them residents of the East End — on Saturday. Open with free admission from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors can purchase paintings, drawings, collage, and small sculptures as well as jewelry and furniture in a Makers Market, in the Cheryl and Michael Minikes Garden.

Avoid the Water at Fort Pond, C.C.O.M. Warns

Concerned Citizens of Montauk has warned people to avoid contact with the water in Fort Pond after samples taken at two sites on the pond earlier this week showed a certified harmful blue-green algal bloom, which can post a threat to human and animal health.

Carnival Time in Bridgehampton

The Bridgehampton Carnival, which raises money for affordable housing in the Town of Southampton, starts Friday — it was supposed to begin on Thursday, but rain seems to have delayed the opening — and runs through Sunday, returning from July 24 through July 27.

High Bacteria Levels at South End of Lake Montauk

In its latest round of water testing results for the week of July 15, Concerned Citizens of Montauk identified East Creek at the south end of Lake Montauk as an area of serious concern. Water sampled there showed the highest levels of the bacteria enterococcus of any of the more than two dozen sites monitored by C.C.O.M.

Fireworks Over the Harbor

The Clamshell Foundation’s Great Bonac Fireworks Show will be set off over Three Mile Harbor at 9 on Saturday. 

Good spots to watch the show include the head of the harbor, Maidstone Park beach, Sammy’s Beach, Gann Road, or beaches on the west side of the harbor. Boaters head into the harbor early for a good viewing spot. 

The rain date is Sunday.

Teresa Loos, who leads Homeschooling 101 classes at libraries across Long Island, will give an introduction to the rules and regulations, paperwork, samples of learning materials and transcripts, programs, and resources.
