Anthony Figliola, a former deputy supervisor of Brookhaven Town, has announced his candidacy for the Republican Party’s nomination to represent New York’s First Congressional District.

Continuity was on the agenda when the East Hampton Town Trustees selected officers and staff during their organizational meeting on Monday night.

In his State of the Town address on Tuesday, East Hampton Town Supervisor Peter Van Scoyoc spoke about the acute shortage of affordable housing here, renewable energy and sustainability, planning, the town’s finances, and building projects. On housing, which he said is “threatening to unravel the fabric of our community,” he announced an “All Hands on Housing” initiative.

A handful of recent crashes on East Hampton Town roads resulted in minor injuries to a few of the drivers.

A Harbor View Avenue resident woke up on Sunday to find someone had thrown eggs at his house overnight, though nothing was seriously damaged. He called the police, who, in their written report, attributed the incident to “incorrigible youth.”

Dance and acting classes, ukelele and percussion, virtual fun, and celebrations of snow, snow, snow are on the schedule for kids and teens this week.

Starting Monday, anyone traveling through the heart of Sag Harbor Village might experience traffic snarls, as National Grid begins replacing the gas main underneath Main Street. Workers will be on site between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.

As we enter a new year and come upon the second anniversary of the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is time once again to review the most current guidelines for testing, quarantine after exposure, and isolation while infected with Covid-19. This is particularly necessary as the Centers for Disease Control recently updated their guidelines to reflect the latest known data about the rising Omicron variant, which has spread at an incredible pace.

The push to expand access to Covid-19 vaccines continues on the South Fork, with East Hampton Town adding five additional vaccination clinics in February and Stony Brook Southampton Hospital moving its clinics to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Hamptons to accommodate more appointments.

Gloria Taradash, who was known as Glorious, died of cardiopulmonary arrest on Dec. 24 at New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. She was 93.

Michael Parrella, an Army veteran who worked for the United States Postal Service, died at home in Sag Harbor on Dec. 21. Mr. Parrella, who was 90, had been in declining health for the last several months.

Brent Newsom, a chef, caterer, and restaurant and nightclub owner who lived in Wainscott and East Hampton, died on Dec. 27 of complications of Covid-19.

Word has reached The Star that Irene Feldt of East Hampton died of heart failure on Aug. 19. She was 89.

Spurred by an avalanche of positive Covid-19 cases over the holiday season among families, kids, and teachers, virus-related impacts have been fast and furious in coming to South Fork schools.

On behalf of his client, the driver in a hit-and-run incident in August that led to the death of Devesh Samtani, a Hong Kong teenager who was vacationing here, the lawyer Edward Burke Jr. offered sorrowful condolences Wednesday to the Samtani family outside Suffolk County Supreme Court in Riverside.

High school sports made a stuttery recovery in the past year of Covid. The good news was that there were at the high school level two fall seasons in 2021, in which 11 mostly-playoff-caliber East Hampton High teams contended.

The first day of the new year was drizzly and drab, and, to some, depressing, though you wouldn’t have known it had you been at East Hampton Village’s Main Beach or at the Beach Lane road end in Wainscott for the New Year’s Day plunges that afternoon.
