Water Report: Lack of Rain Keeps Bacteria Levels LowThe latest water quality report from Concerned Citizens of Montauk stands out for a whopping outlier: A persistent and unresolved problem with elevated enterococcus bacteria levels at East Creek in Montauk hit a new high mark this week.

To help raise money for it while offering some solid tunes, there will be a "Let's Paint the Church" benefit concert featuring the HooDoo Loungers on Friday starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for 10 to 18-year-olds. The under-10 set can listen for free.
Bruce Beyer, who helped arrange the benefit, has said estimates for painting the church are more than $100,000. For the first stage, they're just looking to "clean the front up" to make it more presentable from the street.
Performances of 'Peter and the Wolf' Are Friday and MondayStarting Friday, students of the Hampton Ballet Theatre School will perform their annual production of "Peter and the Wolf" with a live orchestra, vivid original costumes, and surprise guest narrators.
Shows are at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Friday at Herrick Park in East Hampton Village, with a rain date of Saturday, and on Monday at the Children's Museum of the East End in Bridgehampton, with a rain date of Tuesday.
High enterococcus bacteria levels remain a consistent problem at East Creek at Lake Montauk — and the cause a continuing mystery — as reported in the latest water quality update from Concerned Citizens of Montauk for the week of July 18.
Jaime LeDuc, program support specialist at C.C.O.M., which monitors and tests for entero levels, could only speculate that East Creek's elevated entero level — 2,489 MPN/ml (most probable number per millimeter) — "might have something to do with septic systems that need to be upgraded."
