Mary said she was excited to hear that I was making Lidia’s roasted eggplant with ziti and ricotta tonight, testimony, I suppose, to the depths of ennui we’ve plumbed — plum tomatoes are in the recipe too — since Emily and the kids left for Ohio, leaving us to marvel on our own at the glowing light she sees caressing us here.
Time is the priceless container of all we have, and, after all, it will get used up eventually. For those of us who are not young, it feels like a cheat — a blank in what is left of our time.

The East Hampton School Board is considering making Covid-19 vaccinations mandatory for students who play sports on district teams or take part in after-school activities, though some questions remain unanswered at this point.
John Papas Cafe, an East Hampton Village fixture since 1992, is for sale for an asking price of $1.3 million, Hal Zwick and Jeffrey Sztorc, the Compass Real Estate brokers who hold the listing, announced on Monday.
Harold Eriv of East Hampton, the chief executive officer of Foundation Press, a publisher of law books, died of heart failure on July 20 at Delray Medical Center in Delray Beach, Fla. He was 91.
John Hatton Fallon not only "shaped the minds of numerous students" as an East Hampton High School social studies teacher for 30 years, but "as a father, he did it all, from being a scout leader to getting involved in every aspect of his boys' lives," said his family.
Lynn Klein, a veteran of the Coast Guard who was a police officer in East Hampton Village for 20 years, died of cancer on June 14 at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. The East Hampton resident was 72 and had been ill for one month.
Word has reached The Star of the death of Cora Brody Marcus at Southampton Hospital two years ago today. Ms. Marcus, a former resident of East Hampton, was living in Sag Harbor at the time of her death. The cause was a heart attack, following a long illness. She was 80.
John J. Dworsak of Springs died on Saturday at the Brookhaven Health Care Facility in East Patchogue. He was 78. An obituary will appear in a future issue.
An auditor's report for the year 2020 pronounced East Hampton Town's financial statements fairly presented and in accordance with the applicable financial reporting framework, the town board was told this week, with no instances of noncompliance, nor deficiencies or material weaknesses disclosed during an audit that was conducted in the spring.
