Third Charge Is a Felony

Thu, 01/15/2026 - 13:28

An East Hampton man was charged with felony drunken driving after a traffic stop in East Hampton on Jan. 3, just over a year after being convicted of two earlier D.W.I. offenses.

Jean C. Ruiz-Guaman, 23, was pulled over just before 2 a.m., while driving a white Chevrolet west on Oakview Highway after a town police officer observed him traveling at a speed of 44 miles per hour in the 30-m.p.h. zone.

Mr. Ruiz-Guaman reportedly demonstrated multiple signs of intoxication, the officer reported, and performed poorly on a series of field sobriety tests. A search of his record revealed the two previous convictions, both stemming from an incident in December 2024.

Charged with driving while intoxicated with two previous convictions within 10 years, he was held at headquarters for a morning arraignment before East Hampton Town Justice David Filer, who ordered him remanded to county custody. He was transported to the Yaphank Correctional Facility and held there until yesterday, when he was scheduled to return to Justice Court.
