A single-car accident on Dayton Lane in East Hampton Village on Friday claimed the life of a local man.

Jerold M. Schwabe of East Hampton, 80, was found lying on the ground near his Jeep when police arrived. They said emergency responders worked on Mr. Schwabe, but he was pronounced dead after being taken by ambulance to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.

Reports of a Jeep driving through the fence in front of the 1770 House inn and restaurant began around 1:20 p.m. Friday. Village police said the vehicle hit a tree after driving through the fence.

Roads were closed for some time while police worked on the scene.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident, Lt. Steve Sheades said Friday night. A medical emergency could not be ruled out.

Mr. Schwabe was a painter, sculptor, and photographer, according to his website.
