Item of the Week: John Howard Payne, Diplomatic Purse, c. 1841-1852

The composer John Howard Payne used this diplomatic purse during his appointment as ambassador to Tunisia, a position he first received under President John Tyler (husband of Julia Gardiner) in 1841. After President James Polk's election in 1844, Payne was recalled. However, in 1851 Secretary of State Daniel Webster helped Payne regain the appointment, which Payne held until his death on April 9, 1852, in Tunis.

In an ongoing investigation into a hit-and-run accident on Aug. 10 that led to the death of Devesh Samtani, 18, a summer visitor who was one of hundreds walking in the dark on a narrow road after a huge house party in Amagansett, a new report said that there had been 10 people packed into the sport-utility vehicle that Daniel M. Campbell was driving.
