After several days of uncertain predictions, Tropical Storm Henri appeared on a path to make landfall in Rhode Island, sparing the East End the worst of its winds.

With Henri forecast to be "at or near hurricane strength" when it makes landfall on Long Island on Sunday, according to the National Hurricane Center, state of emergency declarations have been issued in East Hampton Town, East Hampton Village, Southampton Village, and Southampton Town.

As Henri heads toward Long Island, East Hampton Fire Department Chief Gerard Turza Jr. on Saturday announced the Main Beach fireworks show, originally slated for Saturday night, has been postponed "in the interest of public safety."

The National Hurricane Center in Miami, Fla., revised its prediction for the path of Tropical Storm Henri, projecting a Sunday morning landfall on Long Island. 

As of the 5 a.m. Saturday warning, Henri was expected to strengthen to a category-1 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour. 

Winds and heavy seas from Hurricane Henri are expected to reach Long Island late Saturday, well before the storm itself makes landfall sometime on Sunday. The National Hurricane Center said that storm conditions on eastern Long Island were possible as early as 8 p.m. on Saturday with Henri's eye passing just east of Montauk Point at about 8 p.m. Sunday.

Still defiant on Tuesday in the wake of a state attorney general's report that said he had sexually harassed current and former female state employees, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced his intention to resign effective Aug. 24.

As the Delta variant of Covid-19 continues to spread in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control on Tuesday officially recommended that even people already vaccinated against Covid-19 once again wear masks in indoor public settings if they are in a region with "substantial" or "high" levels of community transmission.

The South Fork is forecast to experience the worst of Tropical Storm Elsa’s gusty winds, heavy rain, tidal flooding, and rough surf between 6 a.m. and noon on Friday. Elsa, which made landfall in Florida on Wednesday, is expected to move through Mid-Atlantic states and into New England through Friday.

James Crenshaw, who spent one school year as principal of East Hampton High School, resigned from his post Tuesday to take an assistant superintendent's position in another district.
