With air quality levels in Suffolk County sitting just under 200, a level considered unhealthy and nearing very unhealthy, on Thursday morning, some people accustomed to working outside took the day off. For most, however, it was a regular day, despite the peach-colored air.

Adina Azarian, an East Hampton real estate broker, her 2-year-old daughter, Aria, and her nanny, Evadnie Smith, who were killed in a plane crash along with the pilot, were like a family, Ms. Azarian had written. While she was a single mother, Ms. Azarian wrote that “the reality is, I do have a partner in raising her, she just happens to be a lovely woman with a backbone from Jamaica. . . . Every family is unique and in ours Aria rules the roost. . . ”

But while women routinely run and win elections at the local and state levels, and a woman was elected vice president of the United States in 2020, the East End of Long Island has a particularly abundant crop of women seeking office in 2023.

In the absence of other contested races in the upcoming Sag Harbor Village elections, all eyes have turned to the race for Sag Harbor Village justice, which pits two attorneys against each other. Steven Tekulsky, at present an East Hampton Town justice and an associate Sag Village justice, is running against Carl Irace, a Sag Harbor resident with no formal judicial experience.

Surveillance camera footage helped police catch a man in a red truck who stole “Steven Tekulsky for Sag Harbor Justice” signs not far from the police station on Division Street in Sag Harbor on Saturday afternoon. He was charged with petty larceny and criminal possession of stolen property, low-level misdemeanors.

Smoke was reported across the East End on Saturday morning, when residents awoke to the distinct smell of something burning. According to meteorologists with Environment Canada, the smoke is from a wildfire in the Province of Nova Scotia, where some 23,000 hectares of woodland (around 57,000 acres) have been burning in an out-of-control fire that started last weekend.

The lawsuit brought by several residents of Merchants Path in Wainscott against the Maidstone Gun Club continues to wind its way through Suffolk County Supreme Court, meaning that renewal negotiations on the club’s lease of town-owned land on Wainscott Northwest Road, which expires in October, are on hold.

Tim Garneau, an East Hampton Town trustee and volunteer for many civic-minded groups, was recognized by the town board last Thursday for his leadership in the relocation of Little League playing fields from Pantigo Place in East Hampton to the recreational facility on Stephen Hand’s Path in Wainscott, which opened in April.

Rabbi Performs Life-Saving Mitzvah
Rabbi Aizik Baumgarten of Chabad of the Hamptons in East Hampton donated one of his kidneys to Terri Levin Davgin, a longtime congregant who was suffering from kidney failure. “When there’s an opportunity to help, we help. I thanked God for the opportunity for the chance to save a life,” he said.
Canadian Fires Blanketing Region in a Hazardous Smoky Haze
Residents of the East End awoke Saturday morning to a hazy sky and the distinct smell of something burning, which got stronger through the week as a result of the wildfires raging in the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Nova Scotia. The smoke resulted in air quality alerts that canceled outdoor activities of all sorts.
Restored Dominy Shops Will Be Feather in Village’s Cap
Generations of the Dominy family built the bits and pieces that made life work in the 18th century. East Hampton Village is nearly finished with a $2.3 million dollar restoration of the house and shops that will be known as the Dominy Shops Museum.
