The Sag Harbor Whalers celebrated July Fourth by routing the Shelter Island Bucks 16-6 at Mashashimuet Park, “shattering a Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League single-game record with 20 walks.”
Whalers credited with runs driven in were Dylan Kennedy-Fujah (St. John’s), Chris Morabito (Bucknell), Kieran Shea (St. John’s), Jaxon Beiswenger (Bucknell), Derek Desmarais (Tufts), Ethan Righter (Hamilton), and Matteo Cubello (St. Anselm).
The next day, Eric Osterhaus (Fordham) and Desmarais combined for a one-hit 7-0 win over the Westhampton Aviators. Had it been a no-hitter, it would have been the third such for the Sag Harbor team this season. Desmarais, who came into the game after Osterhaus had pitched five no-hit innings, didn’t allow a hit in the sixth, but, with two gone in the Aviators’ seventh, gave up an infield single before a third-to-first groundout ended the game.
As of Monday, the H.C.B.L. standings showed the North Fork Ospreys in first, at 15-7-1, trailed by the Southampton Breakers (11-10-2), the Bucks (11-11-0), the Whalers (9-9-4), the South Shore Clippers (9-11-1), and the Aviators (8-15-0). The Ospreys are to play a doubleheader with the Whalers at Mashashimuet on Sunday at 2 and 5 p.m.
Wood an All-Star
Farther afield baseball-wise, James Wood, the son of Kenny Wood and nephew of Howard Wood, native East Hamptoners, is on the National League’s All-Star Game roster as a reserve outfielder. Wood, who plays left field for the Washington Nationals, leads his team in on base plus slugging percentage (.940), batting average (.288), home runs (23), runs batted in (67), and hits (97).
