Amistad Week Comes to Montauk

Thu, 08/20/2026 - 11:23

The Eastville Community Historical Society and the Southampton African American Museum will host Amistad Week starting on Wednesday with a commemorative ceremony on the beach at Culloden Point in Montauk from 4 to 6 p.m.

A Monuments Toolkit workshop follows next Thursday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Montauk Library, for “community members, heritage practitioners, government staff, artists, and advocates at any level of familiarity” with the toolkit, according to the library’s website.

The workshop will facilitate a discussion of “local historical monuments, memorials, and street names. Participants bring their own local heritage questions into the room (a contested statue, a missing memorial, a street name under debate) and learn how to use the Toolkit’s frameworks. The Toolkit and all related resources are free.”

On Friday, Aug. 28, from 6 to 8, the Montauk Playhouse will be the site of an evening celebration, and “Making the Connection: Amistad,” a film screening and panel discussion, happens on Aug. 29 from noon to 5 at the library.
