East Hampton girls track hosted Harborfields on May 4, dominating the meet, 114-25. Yani Cuesta, the team’s head coach, was especially happy with the 400-meter intermediate hurdles.
Sophia Figueroa won the race, with a new personal record of 71.8. Maggie Greenwald came in second with a season-best 74.4. C.J. Echavarria was third, in 82.1, while Kate Vinski finished in 92.8 and Olivia Chapman in 1:46.2.
“What I liked most about this race is that Olivia Chapman wasn’t assigned to compete in this event, but chose to do it so that her teammate Kate Vinski wouldn’t have to run it by herself,” Cuesta said. “Keep in mind that Olivia had done the racewalk two events before this. Attitudes like this make me so happy as a coach — athletes caring for each other and helping each other out.”
Chapman finished third in the 1,500-meter racewalk in 10:05.5, behind Olivia Stiglitz, in 8:40.5, and Bennett Greene, who won in 8:19.4. Greene hopes to break the 8-minute mark and has continued to improve her time with each meet.
In the triple jump, Lucia Mogavero won it at 31 feet, 2.5 inches, while Sydney Powers came in second at 30 feet, 9.5 inches.
Echavarria was tops in the 100-meter high hurdles in 17.5. Figueroa followed closely behind in 17.6.
Laura Martinez won both the 1,500 meters (in 5:32.8) and the 3,000 meters (13:04.8). Danett Gonzalez-Alcala came in second in the 3,000 with a season-best 13:06.5.
In the 400 meters, Sara O’Brien won in 62.8 seconds. Vanessa Rizzo took second in 64.3, while Lai’la Sanders was third in 66.6. Mogavero recorded a season-best 70.6.
Powers finished second in the 100-meter sprint (14.1), just ahead of Emily Alvarez (14.4) in third.
Josie Mott finished the 800 meters in 2:33.7, securing second place. O’Brien won the 200 meters with a personal record of 27.4, and Rizzo finished third in 29.2.
Back to jumping, Leah McCarron came in second in the long jump, reaching 15 feet. Sierra Stumpf took third at 14 feet, 11 inches. Alvarez set a personal record of 13 feet, 1.5 inches.
In the high jump, Stumpf won by clearing 4 feet, 9 inches. Sabina Piecyk took second with a season-best 4 feet, 6 inches, and Lilly Wood Savarese was third, over the bar at 4 feet, 6 inches.
The winds were whipping so badly at the track, it’s amazing the team was able to throw at all, yet somehow the girls managed to sweep both the shot-put and the discus.
McCarron won the shot-put with a toss of 31 feet, 3 inches. Beth Daniels took second with 24 feet, 1 inch. Amy Fleming came in third with a personal record of 23 feet.
McCarron also won the discus with a throw of 97 feet, 7 inches. Earlier this month, at the North Babylon Invitational, she broke 100 feet (100 feet, 2 inches) for the first time. Daniels placed second with a season-best 84 feet, 2 inches. Lucy Knight finished third with 71 feet, 4 inches. Shirley Jiang set a personal record of 49 feet, 1 inch.
The team also swept the pole vault. Vicky Chen won, clearing 8 feet, 6 inches. Angie Castillo came in second with a personal record of 7 feet, 9 inches. Rizzo placed third with a personal record of 7 feet, and Alexis Salazar set a personal record of 6 feet, 6 inches.
In the 4-by-100 relay, East Hampton’s Team A — Figueroa, Echavarria, Powers, and Mogavero — finished first in 54.0 seconds. Team B — Merritt Bistrian-Emptage, Salazar, Angela Mantilla, and Alvarez — took third in 59.2.
The girls and boys teams will host the East End Classic at the high school on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
