Bonac’s girls swimmers took seventh place at the Section XI Suffolk County championship meet on Sunday. Ten girls on the combined East Hampton, Bridgehampton, and Pierson (Sag Harbor) team qualified to swim in the meet. Many of them posted either season-best or lifetime-best times after doing the same at the league championships just a week earlier.
“The dedication and hard work that the girls put in throughout the season shined through,” Coach Craig Brierley said in his weekly newsletter. “The girls were prepared, excited, and ready to compete and represent their school.”
The senior Lizzy Daniels had the team’s highest finish, taking third in the 200 individual medley.
Daniels, Sydney Powers, Heidi Rizzo, and Vanessa Rizzo placed fourth in the 200 free relay, dropping 4.9 seconds for their best finish of the season (1:49) but failed to qualify for the state meet by 0.4 seconds.
Heidi Rizzo was the team’s top individual point-scorer, earning 20 points for the team with a fourth-place finish in the 500 free and a sixth-place finish in the 200 free.
Jonathan Jamet and his son, Henry, took the stroller division for the second year in a row. Known as one of Montauk’s fastest cyclists, Jamet said he and his 3-year-old trained hard for this one. “It’s been a grueling two-week training program. Henry here cracking the whip left and right. Very proud. We did it again!”
In the 200 medley relay, Lily Caplin, Lucy Knight, and Sydney Powers all swam their best times to finish eighth. Molly Grande, Avienne O’Shea, and Vanessa Rizzo also hit their best times in the 400 free relay to take seventh place.
Daniels, Ginger Griffin, Powers, and both Rizzos will go on to compete at the New York State Championship meet in Rochester on Nov. 21 and 22. Coach Brierley says they’ll start training this week.
