A Springs man was injured after his truck rolled over in Montauk on April 19, and was later charged with misdemeanor drunken driving.
East Hampton Town police said Austin R. Dunham, 21, was driving down Second House Road near South Elroy Drive in a pickup truck when the vehicle left the roadway and struck the guy-wires of a utility pole. The wires caused the truck to overturn in the bushes.
A witness saw the accident and called it in to 911. The driver had minor bleeding to his shoulder but was conscious when police arrived. Officers took him to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, and subsequently charged him with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and driving with a suspended registration, a violation. He was released on his own recognizance.
An allegedly unlicensed driver, a teenager this time, left another driver injured after an accident on the afternoon of April 21. Police say the 15-year-old girl was at the wheel of a pickup truck when she drove from Lafayette Street in Springs into the side of Arely A. Castillo’s Volvo on Harbor Boulevard.
The teen told police she was “inexperienced because she is 15 years old and does not have a driver’s license.”
Ms. Castillo, 58, was taken by ambulance to Stony Brook’s emergency annex on Pantigo Road after complaining of back pain.
The police incident report indicates that no charges were filed or tickets issued to the young girl.
A Hampton Bays man was injured last Thursday morning after another driver rear-ended his truck on Montauk Highway in Wainscott.
Didier Elejalde Betancourt, 32, was waiting in eastbound traffic at around 7 a.m., according to the report, when his truck was struck by Derlis Loja Remache, 19, of Wainscott, also driving a pickup. Both trucks sustained damage but did not require towing. Mr. Elejalde Betancourt complained of neck pain but ultimately refused medical attention. No one in the other truck was hurt.
On April 21, according to police, Robert Eckholm of East Hampton, 94, was backing up in the I.G.A. parking lot in Amagansett when he drove into Bernice Faegenburg’s driver’s-side door. Ms. Faegenburg, 93, a resident of Roslyn Heights, was in the car at the time, and her leg was pinned in the door and reportedly injured, although police said she declined to be checked over by an emergency medical crew.
Finally, on Saturday around midnight, an East Hampton man who reportedly crashed into a parked car on Fort Pond Boulevard in Springs, causing serious damage to both cars, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident. Police located the man after the accident and issued a summons. Further information about this incident is awaiting release.
