East Hampton

Someone gained remote access to an East Hampton woman’s computer on March 5. She called the police Friday to report that her bank had notified her that wire transfers from her account had been attempted but were unsuccessful.

A woman was surprised Friday to get a visit from police, who were responding to a call about a car accident. There had been no accident, she told them. Between them, they eventually figured it out. She’d thrown her backpack, with her smartphone inside, onto the floor, and the phone, detecting the impact, registered it as a crash and reported an emergency.

East Hampton Village

On Match 7, after a man reported his wallet stolen from a Stairmaster at the Y.M.C.A., management reviewed the security footage and spotted a “juvenile” pocketing the wallet, which the man said contained his employment authorization document. The wallet was turned in to police on March 10 and the man declined to press charges.

On Sunday, a customer at Stop and Shop was informed by an employee that his car had been damaged out in the parking lot. Once again, security cameras led police to the perpetrator, who admitted to doing it. He was ticketed for leaving the scene of an accident.

Montauk

Reports of a suspicious vehicle in the hamlet on Saturday night turned out to be several Patchogue residents having dinner al fresco and stargazing.

Sag Harbor

After stopping a pickup truck on Saturday for speeding on Jermain Avenue, police confiscated a “wax vaporizer,” a pen commonly used to smoke a wax concentrate of marijuana, from the passenger seat. It was slated to be destroyed, and the driver was issued an oral warning.

His mother’s house, which is not for sale, had been listed as such on the Douglas Elliman website, a man told police on March 10. A scammer using a fraudulent email address had somehow provided a copy of her driver’s license to the real estate company, said the son. The listing was removed from the website.

A man with a cut lip told police on Friday that he’d come to Sag Harbor to fix e-bikes, but was abruptly thrown out of the trailer he’d been staying in by his employer — who also refused to pay him. He declined medical attention, saying he only needed help getting back to the city.

Trash from an open bag was found strewn across Hampton Street near Jermain Avenue on Saturday. Village workers cleaned it up.

Springs

A car with New Jersey plates caused concern on Glade Road on March 9. A resident of the street called police to report that someone may have been living in it.

Wainscott

An East Hampton man went to town police headquarters on March 6 to complain that someone had opened three bank accounts in his name. He only found out about it, he said, when an unfamiliar debit card arrived in the mail.

Charged With First-Degree Rape of a Child

An East Hampton man was charged late last week with multiple counts of rape in what police say was child abuse involving a girl who was 10 years old when it began.
