Arrested After Swerving Across the Line

Thu, 03/19/2026 - 10:28

East Hampton Village police arrested a man on Saturday night they say was driving while intoxicated with a child in the vehicle, a felony.

A westbound pickup truck on Woods Lane was spotted at around 9 p.m. swerving across the white line onto the shoulder and then over the yellow lines toward oncoming traffic, police said.

The driver, Jose Ricardo Guazhambo, 57, who lives in Hampton Bays, appeared intoxicated but refused a chemical test at headquarters. Police obtained a search warrant and were able to collect his blood just after midnight; the analysis of the bloodwork is still pending.

Police kept Mr. Guazhambo overnight. A relative picked up the child at the station.

The drunken-driving charge against the driver is a felony because there was a child in the truck. In addition, Mr. Guazhambo faces a misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child and several moving violations. He was released on his own recognizance, and is to appear in Justice Court in the future.
