D.W.I. Charge After a Crash

Thu, 08/07/2025 - 10:25

A collision on Pantigo Road Friday, near Maple Lane, sent an Amagansett man to Stony Brook Hospital’s new East Hampton Emergency Department and resulted in a charge of drunken driving for the man whose car had hit his, Kyle Daniel Allen of Middle Island.

Harold Shulman of Amagansett, 88, was driving a Cadillac S.U.V. when, he told East Hampton Town police, a Honda approached from the oncoming lane and crossed the double yellow lines, causing a head-on collision between the vehicles. The Honda driver, Mr. Allen, 23, later submitted to standard roadside sobriety tests and performed poorly on all of them, according to officers.

Mr. Shulman complained of minor head pain and was brought by ambulance to the nearby emergency building for treatment. Mr. Allen was arraigned later that morning before East Hampton Town Justice Steven Tekulsky, who released him on his own recognizance, ordering him to return to court at a future date.

A second collision occurred on the afternoon of July 30 at the intersection of Swamp Road and the Sag Harbor Turnpike in Wainscott, where a Chevrolet pickup truck struck a Toyota sedan.

Eric Hegi of Sag Harbor, 55, who was driving the Toyota on Swamp Road, told police he’d waited for turnpike traffic to yield before proceeding across it to Merchants Path, but that the truck was turning left from the path onto the turnpike at the same time, and struck the driver’s side of his car.

Rene Coloma Moran of East Elmhurst, 52, the driver of the truck, said he’d been waiting at the Merchants Path stop sign and believed that traffic on the turnpike allowed him to turn. He acknowledged striking the Honda as it was going through the intersection.

Mr. Hegi complained of chest pain but refused medical attention. The side of his car sustained damage, but it remained operational. Mr. Coloma Moran was not injured, but the truck’s front and undercarriage were damaged, and it was towed to a private yard.

911 Switch Is Delayed

When contract negotiations for 911 dispatching broke down between East Hampton Town and Village last spring, it became clear that the East Hampton Town Police Department would begin taking the bulk of 911 calls in the township from the village. The turnover was to occur on Jan. 1, but it has now been delayed for at least a month.
