Icy Crash Hurts Passenger

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 07:22

After an accident in East Hampton Village in which a vehicle skidded during the snowstorm last Thursday, one of the drivers was ticketed for driving without a license. His infant daughter was in the back seat.

Cesar Ramos-Hernandez, 28, of Southampton was behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Equinox that was struck by a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche on Montauk Highway just west of Georgica Road at about 6 a.m., village police said.

Michael J. Mirras, 61, of Montauk, the driver of the Avalanche, a pickup truck, told police his truck slid on the snow-and-ice-covered road into the path of the Equinox. Police said that the New York State Department of Transportation had been asked to plow and salt the road before and after the accident.

The East Hampton Fire Department’s heavy rescue squad was called to extricate Laura Ramos, 22, a front-seat passenger, from the Equinox, a sport utility vehicle, Chief Richard Osterberg Jr. said. The White Knights removed a door and she was taken to Southampton Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Chief Osterberg said.

Mr. Ramos-Hernandez was able to get out on his own. He was also transported to the hospital with injuries that were not life threatening. Police later issued him a summons for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a violation. The vehicle was registered to J. Isalde-Manzanares of Southampton.

Zoe Ramos, who was restrained in a children’s car seat in the back, did not appear to be injured. She was taken to the hospital as a precaution, Chief Osterberg said.

Mr. Mirras was walking around when Chief Osterberg arrived. He refused medical attention. Two ambulances from the East Hampton Village Ambulance Association responded.

Traffic was detoured while emergency personnel worked to clear the wreckage. The vehicles were towed. An assistant chief and the department’s fire police remained at the scene for about two hours.

Emergency Dispatch Cost Analysis Debated

With two months to go until the East Hampton Town Police Department takes over the lion’s share of emergency dispatching responsibilities from East Hampton Village, questions linger about the cost of the transition and how the town department will handle the new workload.
