Caring Teacher

    Montauk

    March 2, 2014

Dear David:

Jane Schulte was a friend of mine. But long before our relationship developed into friendship, she was my fifth-grade teacher. When I look back on the 50 years of our interactions together, I see a remarkable person who invariably spoke her mind and let the chips fall where they might.

Mrs. Schulte was a dedicated teacher to me and to countless other children at the East Hampton Elementary School, later named after John M. Marshall, our much beloved principal.

A Happy Occasion

    Amagansett

    February 22, 2014

Dear David,

Bravo, Brava, to the handsome Dell Cullum, the beauteous Deb Klughers, the estimable Larry Cantwell, the trustees, the litter committee, and all those saintly volunteers who cleaned the shoreline today.

What a happy occasion: Sea gulls puffed with pride, my dog’s tail looked like a helicopter blade. I doubt heaven will provide a nicer sight.

Did the Beatles Proud

    February 11, 2014

To the Editor:

In the early ’70s I was working for Channel 13 in New York. The late-night program “Free Time” asked if some staff would stick around to be an audience for one of their eclectic shows. I went over to Studio 55 (Ninth Avenue and 55th Street) around 11 p.m.

Class of ’74 Reunion

    East Hampton

    February 10, 2014

Dear David,

Did you ever spend “Midnight at the Oasis” with Maria Muldaur, or go for a ride on “The Loco-Motion” with Grand Funk Railroad? Was your senior play “My Sister Eileen,” starring Miriam Markowitz and Nancy MacGarva? If the answer is yes, get ready for the East Hampton High School Class of 1974 40th Class Reunion on Sept.

    February 3, 2014

Dear David:

Despicable and deplorable aren’t strong enough to describe the arrogant act of Public Service Enterprise Group Long Island, an unbridled bureaucracy, that as a new kid on the block took it upon itself to chop down our trees without asking the taxpayers whether we liked the idea and whether there might be other less-severe solutions to make their job for us easier for them.

A bit of trivia that makes this matter so ludicrous is that we people who live here and love ou

Thank You, Steve

    East Hampton

    January 21, 2014

Dear David,

A public “can’t thank you enough” to Steve Lynch, our highway superintendent, for caring for our town and its people and to your dedicated crew — all of you getting the job done for us no matter what.

Leadership and service, yet another one of East Hampton’s finest kind.

‘Dogs Don’t Talk’

    New York City

    January 18, 2014

To the Editor:

Last Thursday morning at Guild Hall’s John Drew Theater, I and a packed audience of schoolchildren and adults went to the dogs and loved every minute of it.

As The Star noted, we were all “wowed” by “Dogs Don’t Talk,” this year’s production of the Springs School’s True Blue 52 Opera Company.

Taken Care Of

    East Hampton

    January 13, 2014

To the Editor,

On Saturday I was out on my walk, which I do every morning with my dog, Lexie. While on my walk I started to feel funny. I am a diabetic and it seems that my blood sugars were dropping very fast and I was experiencing low blood sugar.

During this time I met Barbara, another dog-walker. This lovely person seemed to notice that I was having a problem and walked me home and made sure that I was all right.

70 Christmas Trees

    Montauk

    January 4, 2014

To the Editor:

I would like to thank Jimmy Daunt, Richie Daunt, Joseph Horton, and Cindy Dess for their tireless efforts decorating the 70 Christmas trees that line the downtown streets of Montauk for the past 12 years.

When I would see Richie and his crew replacing bulbs and fuses at night in the dark and cold, I knew firsthand what a tough job it was keeping those lights burning, especially in our Montauk winds and weather.

Thank you all for helping make Mo

People Step Forward

    Springs

    December 22, 2013

Dear David,

On Nov. 21 I had revision surgery on my knee. The really different thing in this second-time-around operation for me is now I live alone. My children have been a great support during this time and have done what they were able to do within the confines of their work and family responsibilities. Thus I have had to rely on my neighbors in my Clearwater Beach area.

Betsy Ruth, the East Hampton librarian, has been a godsend.

Alcohol City

    Springs

    December 20, 2013

To the Editor,

Okay, if you read The East Hampton Star this week under “Notices,” next to the last page there is a notice that a license is pending for beer and wine to sell retail in a sports arena under the Alcoholic Beverage Control Law at 385 Abraham’s Path in Amagansett.

Well, folks, for your information, this is the indoor arena at the Terry King ballfield, a place originally set up for the youngsters of our community.

Close Calls at Sea

    Amagansett

    December 15, 2013

To the Editor,

As one dragger captain said, “We all have had our close calls at sea.”

The morning Billy and I left the dock on Billy the Kid to join the search for John from the Anna Mary is a day none of us will ever forget. Every boat has its own story to tell. When you are looking for someone in the ocean it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack. The debris out there — balloons, garbage — every little thing catches your eye.
