     Our town has become a place where people seem to be harboring more and more hate toward one another. I truly hope this story reaches all those who witnessed this incident, along with the individual that displayed such disgusting behavior. More important, we all should take the time to reflect on the ways that we treat each other.

Dear Editor,

    After the initial shock of my husband’s death four years ago, it became apparent that my life would be forever changed, not only on an emotional level but because the money was gone. Everyone said in concern, “Life goes on, and you must go on.” However, you must be able to pay for the necessities of life.

    I found myself doing with less, a lot less than I was used to. We were not wealthy. We were working people in the fishing industry from Montauk.

    The lights of Main Street appeared dimmer this weekend when the news spread about David Hartstein, a gentle soul who left us all too soon.

    It’s funny how life works. Although David and I worked and lived in the same community, it had been some time since we had seen each other, but about a month ago our paths crossed again and it felt as though time had melted away, as if it had been just a few days since we saw each other.

    Shame on East Hampton for allowing its beaches to deteriorate.

    I went to the beach on Memorial Day weekend at Beach Lane in Wainscott. Walking barefoot on the sand is a thing of the past. Litter was everywhere. I counted the remnants of 15 fires — burnt wood, charcoal, cigarette butts, clamshells, chicken bones, corncobs, and broken glass. Broken wood was scattered all around; some of the wood was “hidden” under a thin layer of sand.

    I would like to give thanks and praise to the work and commitment to teaching excellence that has been the mission of all the teachers, staff, school boards, and principals who have been serving our children at Stella Maris (originally St. Andrew’s) for well over 100 years.

    Since 2000, my two daughters attended school there. In December 2005 our family split up. We had to sell our house and move to Manorville. It was particularly difficult on my youngest.

    I am writing to add my thoughts about the lawsuit over control of the beach in Amagansett.

    I have spent summers in Amagansett for over 40 years. I went to summer camp here as child, was an ocean lifeguard at Indian Wells Beach for two years, and am delighted that now my children can grow up and spend their summers here as well.

    I notice that you have published some letters containing rather inflammatory language, some of which I think, and hope others would as well, borders on an affront and insult to others.

    I would like to extend thanks to the many, many volunteers who turned out at the Montauk Movie Theater on Sunday to collect trash throughout the hamlet. We were able to put more than 70 bags of trash into the Dumpster, along with wheels, tires, life jackets, car seats, and other unidentifiable objects from the beaches, roads, and parking lots of Montauk.

    I am a lucky man.

    I purchased property in East Hampton 25 years ago. I held on to it while I worked, thinking of building on it some day. I built my house in 1997. In April of 1998 I retired and moved here with my wife to live full time.

    This Bronx boy is living his dream each day I ride the beach in my truck and fish. At nearly 75, I am grateful that East Hampton is a community where dollars in one’s pocket cannot alter heritage and history.

     I thought that your readers might be interested in my interview on National Public Radio.

    On Wednesday, March 16, I was interviewed by Dick Gordon of “The Story in North Carolina” for a broadcast on NPR. The interview was about my book, “My Father and Albert Einstein,” that was published in 2008 by iUniverse.

    I’m not sure if or when the interview would be broadcast in the East Hampton area.

Years ago in my father’s effort to educate his simple son, he advised me that life was not black and white, pure and impure. He stated life was 10 percent black, 10 percent white, and the remaining 80 gray. In that large area I would be compelled to think...

Do you ever want to just throw up your hands in frustration when the voices of unreason seem to be overpowering logic and common sense? That’s how I feel when I read and hear the comments of the Obama haters nationally and in this newspaper. Never mind that he is our president, elected by the people to lead the country...

From the standpoint of someone who has sailed in the lake, the Kalikow dock creates the need for entirely new traffic patterns for those who use small types of craft (sunfish, kayak, canoe, etc.), and there are many during the summer.

Landowners in Springs cannot support the Springs Board of Education’s increased annual budget. Eighty-four employees is too many. Then to give a $20,000 raise to the Springs School superintendent this year, with high unemployment in New York State, seems almost insane! It smells of favoritism.

Sometimes it’s the public, not just a private individual or business, that has to yield immediate benefits for the sake of sound long-term planning. Your carefully thought-out editorial about Bostwick’s current effort to get a permit for a new roof makes the point about a typical case.

As a longtime part-time resident of East Hampton and western Nassau County, I was amazed as to how many anti-Bush demonstrations we would encounter going from place to place in the 10 months preceding the 2008 presidential election. Some, especially the one in front of the Southampton 7-Eleven...

On behalf of our clients, all of us at East Hampton Meals on Wheels do heartily thank Boy Scout Troop 298, all of the scout leaders, and the American Legion Post 419, who made possible the delicious spaghetti dinner on Sunday. Our volunteers delivered more than 50 dinners to our homebound clients...

One has to wonder if Richard Higer, a regular on these pages, would benefit from widening his source material for his diatribes outside his admitted main source of information, The New York Times. If that were the case, he might be reminded that the Congressional Budget Office is only committed to evaluating on the legislative assumptions incorporated in the actual bills it reviews.

The other day while driving on Route 114 I came across a trembling dog, a Weimeraner in the middle of this busy road. The dog was walking in circles and shaking. Several cars swerved to avoid him. I took a leash I had and proceeded toward the dog.

I just read the obituary of Helen Pugh of Montauk. I am remembering her kindness and her devotion to her community.

While Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac execs rob the taxpayers of millions of our dollars with their multimillion-dollar salaries, the federal government hides another $2 billion in Obamacare for bailouts...

Nuclear power produces only 15 percent of the globe’s electricity. Is it really worth it? Reactors produce the most toxic waste products known to mankind. Is it really worth it?

Well here we go again, the town board is considering holding another farce meeting on the leaf-pickup program. They didn’t listen to the residents the first time so why waste our time again?

Sadly, we are once again witnessing another episode of cultist zealotry, politically harnessed to thwart a property owner’s rights to develop his own property in a manner he would like.
