Take Note of This Date Montauk April 15, 2013 To the Editor: At any point in time, for whatever reason — a fall, a stroke, that scary pain in your chest that doesn’t go away, perhaps an automobile accident you hadn’t planned on, a boating accident, even the fishhook or knife incident gone astray, whatever — you do the 911 call, and within minutes the flashing light of an ambulance, the siren cutting the quiet air, and help is there.
Respect the Beaches East Hampton April 15, 2013 To the Editor, The summer season is fast approaching and as the weather begins to warm, so does debate concerning the continuation of various time-held rights and traditions on the East End. Citizens for Access Rights is a grassroots, nonpolitical organization whose genesis was in response to the public access to our shorelines being threatened.
A Fitting Tribute East Hampton April 7, 2013 To the Editor, I had the special privilege of attending a Holocaust Memorial ceremony at the Jewish Center of the Hamptons on Sunday. The proceedings were dignified and captured the feeling of sadness and renewal. The speaker was very effective in telling stories of survival and defiance.
St. Baldrick’s Goal Montauk March 26, 2013 Dear David, Thank you again for helping the Montauk community support our recent St. Baldrick’s event held at the St. Therese School in Montauk.
Council Manager East Hampton March 19, 2013 Dear David: This letter is in response to an editorial that appeared in the March 7 edition of The Star. The League of Women Voters of the Hamptons, after a period of two years of intensive research into a council manager form of government, voted to adopt a position in favor of and advocate for this type of government for the town of East Hampton.
Not a Clinic? East Hampton March 18, 2013 Dear Editor: At the zoning board of appeals meeting at Town Hall on March 12, much new information was revealed regarding the Dunes luxury rehabilitation facility currently operating in the Northwest Woods. The topic of the evening was whether or not the board should uphold the building inspector’s determination that the Dunes is a semi-public facility requiring a special permit and site plan review.
A Healthier Community East Hampton March 11, 2013 Dear Editor: South Fork Community Health Initiative wishes to express our sincere gratitude to East Hampton Healthcare Foundation, Southampton Hospital, the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, and our staff, friends, and volunteers for their participation in our health fairs. We extend a very special thanks to Most Holy Trinity Church for allowing us to host our health fairs at their elementary school.
Zoning Change for Cyril’s Amagansett March 4, 2013 Dear Editor. At tonight’s town board hearing (March 7, 7 p.m.), the rezoning proposal for Cyril’s Fish House will be considered. Changing the zoning to neighborhood commercial will create more problems than it will solve.
Woodland Words Northwest Woods February 13, 2013 To the Editor, My dear Robert Dash, how eloquent your woodland words.
Dogs on the Beach East Hampton February 18, 2013 Dear David Rattray, How unfortunate that East Hampton Village is attempting to remove dog access to our beaches! This is an assault on those of us who respect the rights of all to enjoy peaceful and clean access. Perhaps greater emphasis could be placed on monitoring our beaches and assessing steep fines to those who show no regard for others.
Above and Beyond Amagansett February 11, 2013 To the Editor, On behalf of myself, family, and friends of John Judge, I would like to express our gratitude and thank everyone for their support, condolences, and continued faith that we would one day learn who had taken away John’s life. As most by now know, we learned on Friday who was responsible for this.
Need for Road Repair Wainscott January 31, 2013 Dear David: I want to compliment Joanne Pilgrim on her excellent article on Highway Superintendent Lynch (“And Miles to Go Before He Sleeps”) and the need for road repair on the front page of last week’s Star.
Captured the Spirit Springs January 27, 2013 Dear Editor, I wanted to thank Helen S. Rattray for her wonderful commentary (“Bravissimo, Bonac,” Jan. 24) on our recent fourth-grade opera, “Cat Tales,” performed at Guild Hall. Her column provided an overview of the “creating original opera” program and its impact on Springs School, “the little school that could.” She absolutely captured the spirit of the 16-year tradition, and the special contribution of Kyril Bromley.
Put Students First East Hampton January 14, 2013 Dear David, When that wise group of people sat down and devised the mighty Constitution, lo these many years ago, they knew that this nation could only flourish if it had an educated populace. Thus public education was conceived, and over the years it has been extended to all regardless of race, creed, or national origin. This grand scheme of public education, open to all comers, would be free and paid for by taxes.
Generous Donations Springs January 8, 2013 Dear Editor, On behalf of our board of directors, I want to thank all of our members and patrons for their recent generous donations to the Springs Historical Society and Springs Library. We wish them and everyone a happy and healthy New Year. Sincerely, HEATHER ANDERSON President Unforgettable Montauk January 11, 2013 To the Editor: My friend Bob Lamparter, a tireless ad

All creatures large and small owe you and your staff a debt of gratitude. We will always keep you in high esteem and as a role model for those who love life in all its forms. Best, Patricia, Joseph, Sebastian, and Katherine Habr, on behalf of Ms. Lili, Ms.
Communal Soul East Hampton December 24, 2012 Dear David, I want to acknowledge the imminent opening of the St. Michael’s senior citizen housing development in Amagansett as well as the existing senior citizen housing developments known as Windmill One and Two and Whalebone, which provide housing for people of limited financial means. All of these housing developments are a part of the diverse community of East Hampton that we live in and in my view represent an important part of our communal soul.
Merry Smiles East Hampton December 17, 2012 Dear East Hampton Star, I would like to thank all of the people who donated toward Toys for Tots at the One Stop Market this past season. With your help and support, this has put merry smiles on children’s faces. With much gratitude, KELLY FIELD BILL HALL WENDY HALL CAROL L.
Message in a Bottle East Hampton December 17, 2012 To the Editor, Like all of us, I went through a series of emotions after the shooting that took place at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. First there was shock as the number of dead rose.
Amazing Help East Hampton December 4, 2012 Dear Editor, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the East Hampton and Springs community for their prayers, thoughts, and help during the recent passing of my sister Tara Loper Mansir. Tara was an amazing woman and the help we received during this difficult time was amazing. Thank you Susie Roden and the Coalition for Women’s Cancers, Theresa and Abby Roden, Vickie Durand, Terry Hickey, and all the people of St. Luke’s Church, Yardley and Pino Funeral Home.
More Tasteful East Hampton November 29, 2012 Dear Mr. Rattray, The Zoning Board recently granted John and Suzanne Cartier the right to keep their existing modest-size home and build a second home of similar proportions for their children and grandchildren on their larger-than-two-acre lot. The village board, however, believes a large-lot scenic easement does not allow two houses on the property and plans to take legal action against the Cartiers.
Dream Big East Hampton November 20, 2012 To the Editor, Recently, we were able to secure our second consecutive Suffolk County Class A Championship. This achievement was part of a community effort and we are indebted for the cheers of support you provided us as we reached one of our goals.
Cost of Litigating Montauk November 15, 2012 To the Editor, When I discuss my class in state and local government I have often joked that I don’t need a text, politicians give me ample material for my lectures. Sag Harbor is the latest example. The Star has covered the debate over the cost of police services to the village as well as the dispute between Janet Lehr and Vered on one side and the village over a pair of legs. Let’s think about this.
Stepped Up Montauk November 9, 2012 To the Editor, At a national and Congressional level, the nature of the debate was brutal, scarring, ugly, and personal to the extent that truth and decency were victims of the worst that we as human beings are capable of.
A Wake-Up Call East Hampton November 1, 2012 To the Editor, They say that sometimes you have to hit people in the teeth with a baseball bat before they will listen. Well, I think we were hit with a big baseball bat with respect to Hurricane Sandy. Can you believe it, a hurricane on Oct. 31? I think it is safe to say a new standard has been set for coastal storms. Let’s see, Sag Harbor Village completely flooded, Montauk Village flooded, Napeague stretch breached, Lazy Point flooded. Wainscott houses destroyed.
Everything Changed October 29, 2012 Montauk Dear David, On Monday at 3 p.m. the wind started roaring through our home. My son was here with me, as the bus to his workshop in Westhampton Beach did not come because of Sandy. Many had called to urge me to leave our home. I called the Montauk police number in the morning to ask if there was any evacuation in Montauk.
A Sad Ending Montauk October 20, 2012 To the Editor, Even with the possibility of their lives being turned upside down, the uncertainty of what was to come, the two owners of Ronnie’s Deli on Montauk’s Main Street plowed along all season not knowing whether they would be there at the end of it. That question was answered when they closed their doors on Oct.
Linda Norris Amagansett October 15, 2012 Editor: I was shocked to read of the suspension of Linda Norris, our indispensable adult day care supervisor, in The Star last week.
Bullying Manhattan October 8, 2012 To the Editor, It’s always distressing to me to read about bullying, but so much worse to read when a kid is so hurt by the abuse that he kills himself to make the pain go away. Anybody who calls a kid a “fag” or a “queer” may have learned the hate at home from parents.
