All in Green Amagansett March 17, 2012 Dear David, We were entertained at the Senior Citizens Center on Friday, with a St. Patrick’s Day party, by Michelle and her staff. It was a wonderful party, with a beautiful room decorated all in green. Very pretty! Children from the Springs School entertained us with their songs relating to St. Patrick, St. Paddy’s Day, and leprechauns. They made and presented to us a decorated flower vase with a green carnation in it.
Sing Its Praises Amagansett March 8, 2012 Dear David: On Feb. 1 I was floored (literally and physically) with a heart attack.
Had the Pleasure East Hampton March 5, 2012 Dear David, On behalf of the East Hampton Day Care Learning Center I offer my sincere congratulations to the director, cast, and orchestra of the East Hampton High School production of “Anything Goes.” I had the pleasure of attending the Sunday matinee performance.
Affordable Project East Hampton February 27, 2012 Dear David: Last week witnessed the formal groundbreaking of the St. Michael’s senior citizens affordable housing project. The leader of this extremely worthwhile undertaking is Michael DeSario, who has devoted countless hours over the last 10 years to the creation of needed, reasonably priced apartments for longtime East Hampton residents.
To Be Honored Springs February 17, 2012 David: This past Wednesday, Feb. 15, a large group from East Hampton attended the reception given for Lee Hayes. The reception was given by the Riverhead Historical Society. The date and time of this event were well published in advance. As most know, Lee is a Tuskegee airman — bombardier and pilot. He served at a time when racism was prevalent. I would estimate the crowd attending numbered close to 200.
Nothing to Fear Springs February 10, 2012 Dear Editor, I am the former managing editor of the New York Public Library, a book author, and an avid Kindle user of many years — so I read with interest Helen Rattray’s “Connections” column (Feb. 9) on her disenchantment with her Kindle and its possible threat to the traditional book. I continue to be surprised by the resistant view many serious readers take of the Kindle, even as it grows in popularity.
Tears of Joy Burnsville, N.C. February 6, 2012 To the Editor, When we lived in East Hampton we knew it was one of the most beautiful places on earth. But the physical beauty is just the tip of the iceberg. We wanted to thank our friends and neighbors for supporting us. Robert Curtis, who owned a leather-goods shop in East Hampton that eventually was known as Billy Martin, was in a devastating motorcycle accident last May. On Nov.
Need to Name East Hampton January 30, 2012 Dear Editor, Twenty years ago I formed the habit of taking frequent walks on what I now know to be the Debra Brodie Foster Trail in Two Holes of Water Park. Since then the head of the trail has blossomed with information. This began in 1995 with a small and discreet bronze plate set into a large rock honoring Ms. Foster’s largess.
What Happened? Sedona, Ariz. January, 17, 2012 East Hampton Star: I raised my family enjoying the summers and holidays in East Hampton for most of my life. It was a special place.
Talented Performers East Hampton January 1, 2012 Dear David, I would like to thank all of the talented performers who participated in the Young at Heart concert at St. Luke’s Church on Friday. The night was very successful due to the amazing musicians who sang and played their instruments. The audience that was present, as well as myself, were captivated and in awe for the entire show. It was a great reminder of how gifted our young people are. It was a night to remember and one that made me proud to be a member of St.
Pulled Together East Hampton January 7, 2012 Dear David, A search-and-recovery operation does not just happen. We have well-trained people in the Springs Fire Department and East Hampton Town police and Sag Harbor dive teams. There were many rescuers on the water recently, and we should be proud of them all. But at this point I would like to talk about our marine patrol, dive team, and ocean rescue team. Training that does not fall short when the emergency hits is not to be taken for granted.
Before I Knew East Hampton January 2, 2011 Dear David, I just want to thank the person who found my pocketbook and gave it to a Waldbaum’s employee. I had it back even before I knew it was gone. You made my new year’s! SHEILA DUNLOP Praise the Legion East Hampton December 26, 2011 Dear Mr.

Members of the Montauk community, the local merchants, and Father Michael of St.
Great Honor Montauk December 12, 2011 Dear David, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Montauk Chamber of Commerce for selecting me for their person of the year. This has been a great honor to me and my family. I would further like to thank all the friends and family that attended the Chamber’s end-of-the-season dinner last Thursday at ENE.
Money Is Hanging East Hampton December 5, 2011 To the Editor, It emerges from news of a federal investigation that many paintings, that sold for as much as $17 million as the work of such East End artists as Jackson Pollock and Robert Motherwell, might well be fakes.
Many Friends Montauk November 26, 2011 To the Editor: My family and I would like to thank the many friends who came to our support after tragedy struck. I would also like to thank all who donated food to us and those who purchased meals for us at Herb’s Market.
Near Disaster East Hampton November 14, 2011 Dear Mr. Rattray, Just a public note of thanks to the folks at Spring Close restaurant on Pantigo Road in East Hampton: While enjoying a scrumptious repast and delightful dining experience, one of our family members found herself choking on food. Due to the loving kindness and quick responses of an owner, Colin Keillor, three people who happened to be there as well — an emergency medical worker, Ms. Field, Dr. Brower, and Lt.
Positive Campaign Montauk November 13, 2011 Dear David, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community for making my first venture into seeking an elected office a very positive experience.
Thanks, Amagansett Amagansett November 4, 2011 Dear David, How wonderful that we live in communities that still have hometown qualities. In Amagansett on Halloween, the major road, Montauk Highway, was closed to traffic.
Outstanding East Hampton October 28, 2011 To the Editor, Tom Lawrence, East Hampton Village’s chief code enforcement officer and building inspector, is an outstanding citizen and public servant. Knowledgeable, organized, community-oriented, and dedicated, he goes about difficult work with little recognition or thanks.
People First Montauk October 23, 2011 To the Editor, I am writing you this letter to thank Joe Bloecker and Larry Penny for all their help with my daughter Dorothy’s Girl Scout silver project. He and Larry are what is good about our East Hampton government. They put people first as all our officials should. On Election Day I hope the people in our community come out and vote for Joe Bloecker.
Never Forgot East Hampton October 16, 2011 To the Editor, In 1999 it was my good fortune to meet Ted Dragon. I went to his home to look at furniture for reupholstery. We ended up reupholstering all of his living room furniture. He chose beautiful velvets in different jewel tones. We even reupholstered the unusual tete-a-tete Texas longhorn love seat that I later learned was left to him by Lee Krasner.
Acted so Quickly East Hampton October 5, 2011 To the Editor, East Hampton High School was great. I just wanted to thank the staff and students of East Hampton High School for the way they acted so quickly on Friday, Sept. 23. My son had a medical emergency and everyone impressed me on how well the emergency was taken care of. He is doing much better, so thank you, E.H.H.S. students and faculty, and E.M.T.s who responded.
Wonderful Community East Hampton October 3, 2011 Dear Editor, The family of Katherine Myers Penati wishes to thank everyone in this wonderful community for their outpouring of love, kindness, and generosity in our time of grief. We would especially like to thank Mr. Tom Connors, Katherine’s longtime companion, and Mr. and Mrs. J. Bates, for their generous support.
Vote Yes Amagansett September 26, 2011 Dear David, Amagansett residents are fortunate in this day and age to live in a community that has a volunteer fire department. These professional and dedicated volunteers respond to fires and medical emergencies that put our lives at risk. The Amagansett Fire Department has an opportunity to purchase the adjacent Pacific East property for future expansion, when needed.
Choice of Dates Amagansett September 12, 2011 Dear David, I just became aware of the 30th annual Fall Festival, supported by the Montauk Chamber of Commerce, being held on Oct. 8 and 9 in Montauk. Paul Monte, owner of Gurney’s Inn, heads the chamber. Friday evening, Oct. 7, through Saturday evening, Oct. 8, is the most holy of the Jewish holidays, Yom Kippur — a day of fasting! This festival has scheduled its chowder contest on that day. It’s hard to believe that Mr.
At No Cost East Hampton September 5, 2011 Dear Editor, The Community Council of the Town of East Hampton would like to acknowledge the generosity of John Werwaiss for his generous gift of 1,400 gallons of fuel oil to eight families in need within our community. Delivery of the fuel oil was graciously facilitated by Andrew Jurkiewicz of East Hampton Fuel Oil Corporation. Mr.
Let Us Not Forget Montauk September 4, 2011 Dear Editor: It has been 10 years since the terrorist attacks on our country. At the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and in the field in Pennsylvania many innocent lives were lost. Let us remember those brave firemen and policemen who risked and lost their lives trying to rescue the victims. Let us fly the American flag proudly as we did just after the attacks. Do you remember our flag flew along the highways, on overpasses, and from homes and businesses?
Our Heritage East Hampton August 23, 2011 To the Editor, Milton Miller was the guest speaker at the Springs Historical Society on Sunday, Aug. 21, and treated us with his accounts of growing up in Amagansett. Born 92 years ago, his memories of growing up back then were enlightening and entertaining. Hugh King, as the interviewer, sparked memories of Milt’s life and touched on his many memories of fishing, schooling, and making do, from the 1920s on. It was a lifestyle of strong community bonds and helpfulness.
