Playhouse Concept Montauk January 12, 2015 Dear Editor, Thank you for your coverage of the Montauk Playhouse Community Center Foundation’s presentation at last week’s Montauk Citizens Advisory Committee meeting and thank you to the Montauk C.A.C.
Leaving This House Montauk January 2, 2015 To the Editor, Friday, Jan. 2, 5 a.m. I am in the basement of the house. I should be packing to go to Connecticut, but instead I am carefully hanging my hunting clothes on the clotheslines, as I have done so may times before. Procrastination? No, just savoring the ritual in this place where there have been so many rituals before.
Montauk’s New Librarian Shelter Island December 22, 2014 To the Editor: There is a sweet irony now when I see cars passing through Shelter Island with their “Montauk — The End” bumper stickers. Actually you folks are now at the beginning — the beginning of a wonderful new era for your library. Our librarian for seven years, Denise DiPaolo, is now Montauk’s new librarian. In a short time, Denise transformed our quiet country library to the most exciting place, and certainly the cultural center, on Shelter Island.
One That Closed Montauk December 17, 2014 To the Editor, If my husband says don’t cook, we’ll eat out. I get to really enjoy the restaurants in Montauk. There is one that closed, and we are very sorry to lose Manucci’s.
A Proper Sandwich East Hampton December 10, 2014 To the Editor: Sandwiches are going the way of the dodo. Who under 60 years of age has the slightest idea of how to make a proper sandwich? There are still sandwich shops, I believe, manned by much younger folks, however, who don’t have a clue. I just fought my way through a sandwich costing a bit under $10, from a hoity-toity place famous for its — what? Luxury appeal? Let’s describe it: On multigrain bread, with lettuce, tomato, and, the main event, tunafish.
So Blessed East Hampton December 8, 2014 Dear Editor, We have our calendars, as well as all of the lovely decorations and illuminations that appear in our villages to help remind us of the season — the season of remembering and giving. But the people in the Town of East Hampton have never needed a sign or symbol or season to remember.
Heartfelt Thanks East Hampton November 24, 2014 Dear David, On Nov. 15, the Ladies Village Improvement Society conducted its semi-annual Keep East Hampton Village Beautiful cleanup. There are so many people to whom we owe the success of this effort. The L.V.I.S. Tree Committee would like to thank Rebecca Molinario, the village administrator, for her support and leadership in making this happen and Barbara Borsack and Rick Lawler of the village board for participating in the cleanup.
Great Support East Hampton November 22, 2014 Dear Editor, Recently, we were able to secure our third Suffolk County Class A championship in the past four years, our first Long Island championship, and our first berth in the New York State Final Four in Middletown, where we played for the state championship. These achievements were part of a communitywide effort, and we are forever indebted to all of you for the great support you have provided us as we sought to achieve our goals and dreams. Thank you
Medical Care in Montauk Montauk November 16, 2014 Dear David, While we await resolution on Dr. Knott’s departure, I invite you to focus on another issue affecting your medical care. Do Montauk residents wish the availability of year-round, paid, advanced life support during that 40-minute ambulance ride to Southampton Hospital, just as we provide Montauk summer residents from mid-June to mid-October? Outside of this time frame, paid A.L.S. is currently available for only 12 hours (6 a.m. to 6 p.m.).
Boys Soccer Champions East Hampton November 10, 2014 Dear Editor, As they leave to represent us in the New York State Final Four, I want to publicly express my admiration for the East Hampton High School boys soccer team. After seasons of enduring racist comments and threats from both the players and parents of other teams on Long Island, they went on to win their first-ever Long Island championship. I am so proud of the way the current team and past teams have handled themselves.
Thank Our Veterans East Hampton October 30, 2014 To the Editor, On the occasion of the upcoming Veterans Day, the East Hampton Rotary Club would like to recognize and thank our veterans who have served our country. Members of the local V.F.W. and American Legion are valued members of our community. The V.F.W.
Fitting Tribute Groton, Mass. October 21, 2014 Dear Sir, I have been meaning to write you for a while about the Aug. 14 obituary for my mother, Helen Cordier Johns. Although we sent you the obituary published in the local paper here, or some edited version of it, yours was researched, edited, and in large part re-written. The result was a really beautiful and fitting tribute in a newspaper she always loved. Thank you so much for this good work. Sincerely yours, JEAN J.
Cut (Plastic) Loose East Hampton October 18, 2014 Dear David: Plastic is everywhere, especially on our beaches and our front yards or the road right in front of our houses. I am on the East Hampton Recycling and Litter Committee for the Town of East Hampton. I was taking a walk a week or so ago on one of our most beautiful beaches with a friend and I could not help myself when I started seeing litter of all kinds, on this one of our many beautiful beaches.
Low-Income Projects Wainscott October 11, 2014 To the Editor: As a 27-year resident of the wonderful village of Wainscott (on Route 114 approaching Sag Harbor) — a place where both my children attended the Wainscott School, and where I have been a willing taxpayer since 1987 — I am appalled that two low-income housing projects are being actively considered by the Town of East Hampton and the Village of Sag Harbor. East Hampton, a town which has distinguished itself, for over 260 years, on the premise of “progress t
Bag the Bags Quogue October 6, 2014 Dear David, Please consider the following commentary on the downtown Montauk shoreline stabilization project. My assessment of the project is based on extensive experience in coastal zone management. More specifically, I was professionally employed in South Florida, where my role was to evaluate and facilitate shoreline protection projects.
Spellbinding Theater Amagansett September 26, 2014 David, Off Broadway is right here on Main Street in East Hampton. No need to travel to the big city, when most Tuesday nights (check Star listings), the JDTLab at Guild Hall is providing some of the best theater you’ll see on or off Broadway. Two recent Tuesday performances my wife and I caught, Joe Brondo’s “Bluebirds” and, this past Tuesday‚ “Chicken-Fried Ciccone,” written and performed by J.
Finest Kind East Hampton September 18, 2014 Dear David, Steve Marley, who taught my children in high school a long time ago, was very special. He loved his subject matter, history, cared about his students, and was devoted to his town. In other words, he was yet another of East Hampton’s finest kind. LONA RUBENSTEIN Lovely People Wainscott September 22, 2014 Dear David, No disrespect intended, bec
Lifeguards Were Tops Springs September 2, 2014 Dear Editor, Spent this whole summer on Atlantic Beach in Amagansett. I must say the young men and women who were the lifeguards at the beach were tops! Always on guard and ready when the call for duty was needed. I felt very secure swimming, knowing that they were watching. On Friday, Aug. 29, I overheard one of the women say that there were 15 rescues that day.
Not Much Left Springs September 1, 2014 Dear David, We read every day about war. War can be defined as an invasion by one group assaulting another group. Isn’t that what has been happening in East Hampton? A war upon the town? Are we not struggling to maintain who and what we are? Last week’s Star editorial called it right when the editor described our decline, a slow but steady sinking into just another beach town, maybe just a bit less honky-tonk right now, but on its way to the bottom of the barrel.
Unless You Can Park Wimbledon, London August 23, 2014 Dear Sir, During the past seven years it has been my pleasure and privilege (and that of my family) to be able to spend part of our summer with generous American friends in their delightful Amagansett hideaway. As their guests, we enjoy everything on offer here as if we were residents ourselves.
Artifact #1042 East Hampton August 16, 2014 Dear David, As of Aug. 13 at 9:45 a.m., as it left the hangar at J.F.K., the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 419 are the proud owners of artifact #1042 of the World Trade Center.
To the Drivers East Hampton August 11, 2014 Dear David, As the anniversary of my car accident approaches I find myself hypersensitive to the drivers on our roads. Every time I look in the mirror I am reminded of the metal plate and four screws that are permanently in my neck from a giant yellow truck at the corner of Stephen Hand’s Path and Route 27.
For Jeff Bogetti My friend doesn’t live across anymore Won’t see him when I go out the door Can’t believe he’s still not there His presence still in the air His family so brokenhearted That Jeff, so young, has too soon departed Yet his joyful, protective soul remains Under which blissful peace still reigns GARY DUKOFSKY Dorothy King East Hampton July 28, 2014 Dear Editor, It was with real sadness t
Of Dorothy King Shutesbury, Mass. July 26, 2014 To the Editor: Carol and I will always have fond memories of Dorothy King, as she helped us so much with our research on Carol’s great-uncle and former village mayor, Jud Banister. We still have her first email from Nov. 15, 2008, where she says she pulled our letter to the editor from the previous May that had migrated to the bottom of the pile next to her computer.
Caught in a Rip Tide Shelter Island July 21, 2014 Dear Editor, I am a Shelter Island resident who had the pleasure of swimming at Indian Wells Beach last Thursday as the guest of an East Hampton friend. I grew up swimming in the ocean in Seabright, N.J., and consider myself a competent ocean swimmer, so, after checking with the lifeguards as to how long they were on duty, I plunged into the water. It was a perfect temperature, clear and clean, and with waves fun to dodge.
Debt of Gratitude East Hampton July 14, 2014 Dear David, I would like to congratulate the Amagansett Fire Department on its 100th anniversary. I would also like to thank Chief Dwayne Denton and the anniversary committee for inviting me to participate in the parade and celebration on Saturday. It was an honor and a privilege to be involved in such an outstanding event. The day was a tremendous reminder of what community and civic pride are all about.
Offensive Article Sag Harbor July 4, 2014 Dear Editor: The tone and point of view in Debra Scott’s front-page article “Portrait of a Neighborhood” are incredibly offensive. An immediate apology to Bridgehampton residents of that neighborhood is needed, and perhaps some follow-up articles on the lack of affordable housing on the East End. I could go on a point-by-point rant and rebuttal, but suffice it to say instead: You should be ashamed of yourselves! TIM McGUIRE
Wonders of Life Springs June 29, 2014 Dear David, Forty-five years here and Springs still delights us as we get to learn more of the history of the area and continue to cherish the residents, settings, and uniqueness of this wondrous community. Friday night was a dinner with friends at home and great conversations about school districts, housing, and other politically charged topics. No fisticuffs, all in good fun. Saturday presented us with a completely satisfying day of events.
A Garbage Disposal Montauk June 22, 2014 To the Editor, I am happy to learn of the efforts to combat pollution in Lake Montauk. The problems attendant upon the alarmingly growing and increasingly chemically dependent population that inhabits Montauk need to be addressed.
