Many Thanks Montauk April 13, 2015 Dear Editor, It is a great honor to have been selected the grand marshal of the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Montauk. I wish to thank all who made that weekend a warm and wonderful occasion. Marc Remmes and the Friends of Erin, Kathy Keller and the Ladies Auxiliary, Joan Lycke and the luncheon committee deserve special recognition and appreciation.
The Benson Papers Montauk April 3, 2015 Dear Mr. Rattray: Thank you for the article about the Benson papers in the March 19 issue. While consolidating and researching my father’s papers (Richard T. Gilmartin), I found that they were called the “Montauk Matter” since the 1930s, when my father was East Hampton town clerk. I have a copy of the original receipt for those papers, signed by Arthur Benson, plus a typewritten (easier to read) copy done by my father.
When the Store Closed Springs March 24, 2015 To the Editor, As the new owner of a longtime business in Springs, I am writing this letter not only to express my gratitude and appreciation to all those who have been a part of the process, but to let other members of the community know what a special place this is. I recently purchased Barnes Country Market. As a 25-year resident of Springs, I had known many of the customers before I bought the store.
Both Hearing Aids East Hampton March 23, 2015 Dear Editor, Thank you for allowing me to post my letter about needing hearing aids. The response has been amazing. It will take a little while before I actually have them, but due to the kind responses and one very generous donation, I am getting both hearing aids in the near future! Thank you, East Hampton Star, and thank you to all who got in touch with me! Sincerely, LOIS M.
Frances and Bill Amagansett March 16, 2015 Dear David, For many years our small town was fortunate to have been home to two exceptional citizens, Frances O’Brien and William King.
R.I.P. David Silver East Hampton March 10, 2015 To the Editor, I never really knew David Silver, but when we met we always exchanged friendly greetings. I remember seeing him soon after the Bernard Madoff ordeal, when he told me how he had been “Madoffed” and had lost everything. In spite of that tremendous loss and betrayal, he was upbeat. He told me he had moved with his family from the city to East Hampton, and that his children were at the Ross School.
Up Out of the Ice East Hampton February 23, 2015 To the Editor: Thanks to Steve Lynch and Kevin Ahearn and the team of plowers that worked for the Highway Department this winter. The amazing thing was, my mailbox survived the three-foot storm, only to disappear in the three-inch blanket last week. It was tough telling the post office to hold the mail, deliver the mail, wait, no mailbox, then suddenly, a new mailbox, sprung up out of the ice. Thank you again. BRUCE an
The Wainscott School Wainscott February 18, 2015 To the Editor: As a member of the Windmill Village Affordable Housing group, it seems important to respond to the most recent letter put out by the Wainscott School Board. Windmill has proposed to build a 48-unit project for people who live and work in our community. The school board has objected to the project because it says that there will be a huge influx of children that will radically alter the Wainscott School.
Born in the Blizzard Springs February 15, 2015 To the Editor: My husband and I would like to thank the Springs ambulance crew and the Springs Fire Department for the very rapid response to our home in the middle of the now infamous 2015 blizzard. Not only did the ambulance crew arrive promptly, but a group of volunteers arrived with them, armed with snow shovels to ensure our safe passage! Our beautiful 8-pound, 6-ounce baby boy, Cortland John Marchese, was born safely at Southampton Hospital during t
The Go-To Place Springs February 5, 2015 Dear David, Cries of joy were heard all over Bonac and beyond when the good news about the Springs General Store appeared in last week’s Star. The store is just as much a community landmark as is the Pollock-Krasner House, not just because Lee and Jackson shopped there. Under Kristi Hood’s outstanding stewardship, it’s a living monument to local enterprise, as well as the go-to place for great home cooking and local gossip.
A Role to Play in Solving Hunger East Hampton February 2, 2015 Dear Editor, Hunger is a serious issue worldwide, including right here in the United States. In America today, 49 million people struggle with hunger. We all have a role to play in solving hunger. Girl Scout Troop 442 promises to do our part by pledging to: “Donate coins from my piggy bank to the East Hampton Food Pantry.
Most Important Call Amagansett January 24, 2015 Editor: I have been phoning old folks every Thursday morning for over 20 years. My colleagues and I are the volunteers in the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, or R.S.V.P., a national organization aimed at aiding the senior citizen community, particularly those who are alone. We call, and by the sound of their voices we have, over time, come to sense whether everything is okay, and, if not, we patiently chat to find out if they need help or advice.
Model for the Arts Springs January 17, 2015 Dear Editor: I am now a confirmed fan of Springs School opera. For the second year, I was invited to the annual opera by Ms.
Playhouse Concept Montauk January 12, 2015 Dear Editor, Thank you for your coverage of the Montauk Playhouse Community Center Foundation’s presentation at last week’s Montauk Citizens Advisory Committee meeting and thank you to the Montauk C.A.C.
Leaving This House Montauk January 2, 2015 To the Editor, Friday, Jan. 2, 5 a.m. I am in the basement of the house. I should be packing to go to Connecticut, but instead I am carefully hanging my hunting clothes on the clotheslines, as I have done so may times before. Procrastination? No, just savoring the ritual in this place where there have been so many rituals before.
Montauk’s New Librarian Shelter Island December 22, 2014 To the Editor: There is a sweet irony now when I see cars passing through Shelter Island with their “Montauk — The End” bumper stickers. Actually you folks are now at the beginning — the beginning of a wonderful new era for your library. Our librarian for seven years, Denise DiPaolo, is now Montauk’s new librarian. In a short time, Denise transformed our quiet country library to the most exciting place, and certainly the cultural center, on Shelter Island.
One That Closed Montauk December 17, 2014 To the Editor, If my husband says don’t cook, we’ll eat out. I get to really enjoy the restaurants in Montauk. There is one that closed, and we are very sorry to lose Manucci’s.
A Proper Sandwich East Hampton December 10, 2014 To the Editor: Sandwiches are going the way of the dodo. Who under 60 years of age has the slightest idea of how to make a proper sandwich? There are still sandwich shops, I believe, manned by much younger folks, however, who don’t have a clue. I just fought my way through a sandwich costing a bit under $10, from a hoity-toity place famous for its — what? Luxury appeal? Let’s describe it: On multigrain bread, with lettuce, tomato, and, the main event, tunafish.
So Blessed East Hampton December 8, 2014 Dear Editor, We have our calendars, as well as all of the lovely decorations and illuminations that appear in our villages to help remind us of the season — the season of remembering and giving. But the people in the Town of East Hampton have never needed a sign or symbol or season to remember.
Heartfelt Thanks East Hampton November 24, 2014 Dear David, On Nov. 15, the Ladies Village Improvement Society conducted its semi-annual Keep East Hampton Village Beautiful cleanup. There are so many people to whom we owe the success of this effort. The L.V.I.S. Tree Committee would like to thank Rebecca Molinario, the village administrator, for her support and leadership in making this happen and Barbara Borsack and Rick Lawler of the village board for participating in the cleanup.
Great Support East Hampton November 22, 2014 Dear Editor, Recently, we were able to secure our third Suffolk County Class A championship in the past four years, our first Long Island championship, and our first berth in the New York State Final Four in Middletown, where we played for the state championship. These achievements were part of a communitywide effort, and we are forever indebted to all of you for the great support you have provided us as we sought to achieve our goals and dreams. Thank you
Medical Care in Montauk Montauk November 16, 2014 Dear David, While we await resolution on Dr. Knott’s departure, I invite you to focus on another issue affecting your medical care. Do Montauk residents wish the availability of year-round, paid, advanced life support during that 40-minute ambulance ride to Southampton Hospital, just as we provide Montauk summer residents from mid-June to mid-October? Outside of this time frame, paid A.L.S. is currently available for only 12 hours (6 a.m. to 6 p.m.).
Boys Soccer Champions East Hampton November 10, 2014 Dear Editor, As they leave to represent us in the New York State Final Four, I want to publicly express my admiration for the East Hampton High School boys soccer team. After seasons of enduring racist comments and threats from both the players and parents of other teams on Long Island, they went on to win their first-ever Long Island championship. I am so proud of the way the current team and past teams have handled themselves.
Thank Our Veterans East Hampton October 30, 2014 To the Editor, On the occasion of the upcoming Veterans Day, the East Hampton Rotary Club would like to recognize and thank our veterans who have served our country. Members of the local V.F.W. and American Legion are valued members of our community. The V.F.W.
Fitting Tribute Groton, Mass. October 21, 2014 Dear Sir, I have been meaning to write you for a while about the Aug. 14 obituary for my mother, Helen Cordier Johns. Although we sent you the obituary published in the local paper here, or some edited version of it, yours was researched, edited, and in large part re-written. The result was a really beautiful and fitting tribute in a newspaper she always loved. Thank you so much for this good work. Sincerely yours, JEAN J.
Cut (Plastic) Loose East Hampton October 18, 2014 Dear David: Plastic is everywhere, especially on our beaches and our front yards or the road right in front of our houses. I am on the East Hampton Recycling and Litter Committee for the Town of East Hampton. I was taking a walk a week or so ago on one of our most beautiful beaches with a friend and I could not help myself when I started seeing litter of all kinds, on this one of our many beautiful beaches.
Low-Income Projects Wainscott October 11, 2014 To the Editor: As a 27-year resident of the wonderful village of Wainscott (on Route 114 approaching Sag Harbor) — a place where both my children attended the Wainscott School, and where I have been a willing taxpayer since 1987 — I am appalled that two low-income housing projects are being actively considered by the Town of East Hampton and the Village of Sag Harbor. East Hampton, a town which has distinguished itself, for over 260 years, on the premise of “progress t
