Art Villages

Long Island Modern, an ongoing series of conversations focused on postwar modernist architecture led by Alastair Gordon, an artist, historian, and architecture critic, will return to LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Mr. Gordon and a guest to be announced will trace the evolution of art colonies, enclaves, and communes in North America from 1879 to the present. With a focus on Long Island, the talk will illuminate how artist-led development helped shape the region’s identity.

Southampton’s Art Village (1891) transformed an area in Shinnecock Hills that was once dismissed as “wasteland” into a vibrant center of plein-air painting whose summer school was directed by William Merritt Chase.

Tickets are $35, $25 for members.

Recital, Master Class

The Liliane Questel Recital Series at the Southampton Cultural Center will feature “Stairway to Self,” a piano performance by Gaston Frydman, on Saturday at 6 p.m. Born in Argentina and based in New York, Mr. Frydman has appeared as a soloist with leading South American orchestras including the National Symphony Orchestra of Argentina, the Asuncion Congress Orchestra, and the National Youth Symphony Orchestra.

The program will include compositions by Frederic Chopin, Nikolai Kapustin, George Gershwin and Earl Wild, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Julian Fueyo, Franz Schubert, and Konstantin Soukhovetski. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door. They are free for students under 21.

Also at the cultural center, Gregory Singer, a violinist who in 2005 founded and became music director and conductor of the Manhattan Symphonie, will lead a master class in music on Monday afternoon at 2. Mr. Singer will share stories of his eccentric pathway through music and life. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students 21 and under.

Nancy Atlas in Sag

Nancy Atlas and her band, who have opened for Crosby, Stills and Nash, Lucinda Williams, Jimmy Buffett, Paul Simon, Elvis Costello, and many more, will bring their raw live performance to Sag Harbor’s Masonic Lodge on Saturday at 8 p.m.

Backing Ms. Atlas are Brett King on bass, Johnny Blood on electric guitar, Denny McDermott on drums, Joe Delia on keyboards, and Greg McMullen on pedal steel and electric guitar. Because it’s a rare small-room performance, seating is on a first-come-first-served basis, with standing room only after that.

Tickets are $50, proceeds of which are donated in part to local charities.

Chamber Recital

Shelter Island Friends of Music has announced that WindSync, a chamber music quintet, will kick off a weeklong residency on the island with a concert on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the island’s Presbyterian Church.

Richard Weinert, the artistic director of Friends of Music, has known the group since they won the Concert Artists Guild Competition in 2012 when he was president of C.A.G.

“Unlike other chamber groups that often shuffled on stage, sat in front of their music stands, arranged their music and looked at each other before starting to play, WindSync bounded on stage and played,” he said. “They choreographed their movements around the stage, so there was constant visual interest as well as great music.”

The group will perform music by Mozart, Viet Cuong, Nadia Boulanger, and Philip Glass. A reception will follow the recital.

Say Cheese (or Caviar), Day or Night

Self Provisions, a storefront attached to Cavaniola’s Gourmet Cheese in Sag Harbor, is “always open,” as is proclaimed by an illuminated sign on the wall at the entrance. Two large, brightly lit vending machines dominate the space, with offerings ranging from sea salt crackers and slabs of French butter to jars of caviar and curated gift boxes — and, of course, cheese.
