Mon, 10/03/2022 - 16:08
Brian O'Leary's painting "Take the A Train" will be shown at MM Fine Art in Southampton.

Five at the Cottage
"Five Local Painters," an exhibition of work by artists with strong connections to the East End, is at the Gardiner Mill Cottage Gallery in East Hampton through Oct. 30. Organized by Andrea Bejsovec, the gallery's chief curator, the show includes work by Susan D'Alessio, Aubrey Grainger, Jean Mahoney, Bob Sullivan, and Aurelio Torres.

Shifting Focus
"Shifts," an exhibition exploring the creative processes of Irina Alimanestianu and Brian O'Leary, will open at MM Fine Art in Southampton on Saturday, with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m.

Both artists have moved from figurative painting to abstraction and back again, transitions that will be reflected in work dating from the 1990s to the present. Mr. O'Leary uses tar and oil paint to create texture, color, and gestural marks. While his paintings read as abstract, figurative elements emerge.

Ms. Alimanestianu's earlier work focused on social constructs and her relationship to the world, but her recent paintings explore biomorphic forms and partial depictions of humans and animals.

A talk with the artist Paton Miller will happen on Oct. 23 at 3 p.m.; the show will run through Oct. 30.

No Minimalism Here
"On the Bright Side," a group exhibition, opens Thursday at the White Room Gallery in Bridgehampton and is on view through Nov. 13. With a focus on vibrant color, "there are no minimalists in this exhibit," said the gallery.

Participating artists are John Joseph Hanright, Russell Young, Jack Flo, Linda Zacks, Craig Alan, Seek One, Punk Me Tender, Nelson De La Nuez, Greg Miller, Rich Bollinger, and Manaz Mostamandy.

A reception will be held on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Long Island Biennial
The seventh edition of the Long Island Biennial is being presented at the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington through Jan. 22. Among the 57 artists in the show are eight from the East End: RJT Haynes, Christa Maiwald, and Michael Ruggiero from East Hampton; Candace Hill Montgomery from Bridgehampton, Patricia Maurides from Sag Harbor, Brianna L. Hernandez Baurichter from Southampton, Steve Palumbo from Quogue, and Ellen Wiener from Southold.

Control and Surrender
"Body Language," a multimedia exhibition of ceramic sculpture, photography, and videography by Nicole Corbett, who was profiled in the Sept. 29 issue, will open at Colm Rowan Fine Art in East Hampton on Saturday, with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. It will continue through Oct. 30.

The Sweet Smell of Nostalgia at Sagaponack General

Stepping into the new Sagaponack General Store, which reopened yesterday after being closed since 2020, is a sweet experience, and not just because there’s a soft-serve ice cream station on the left and what promises to be the biggest penny candy selection on the South Fork on your right, but because it’s like seeing an old friend who, after some struggle, made it big. Really, really big.
