Former New York State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr. has been named to the board of Organizacion Latino Americana of Eastern Long Island.

The move “reflects OLA’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its governance with leaders of distinction whose experience and public service align with the organization’s mission,” according to an announcement from the nonprofit.

“For 20 years I’ve had the opportunity to witness firsthand the benefit of Fred’s thoughtful leadership across a range of issues, including supporting and protecting survivors of domestic violence, supporting dialogue and understanding between local law enforcement and community organizations, creating better access to adolescent mental health, ensuring equitable public education access for all children, creating career and higher education opportunities, advocating for health access, expansion of public transportation access, helping to reinstate access to driver’s licenses for safer streets, and also for his genuine interest in the artistic and cultural celebration of our Latino heritage,” Minerva Perez, OLA’s executive director, said.

Mr. Thiele served as assemblyman from 1995 until his retirement at the end of 2024. “We are in a unique moment testing whether our nation will continue to stand for justice, fairness, and equity,” he said. “We all need to do our part. I look forward to rolling up my sleeves to help OLA fulfill its mission.”
