The Great Pumpkin Compost

Instead of tossing those old jack-o'-lanterns in the garbage, the South Fork chapter of ReWild Long Island is asking people to compost their old Halloween pumpkins and gourds, and has partnered with three South Fork farms and gardens to make that easy.

Pumpkins, which should be free of glitter, paint, and plastic, can be taken to Share the Harvest Farm on Long Lane in East Hampton on Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and to the Montauk Community Garden on South Edison Street on Saturday and Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to noon. Later in the month, on Nov. 16, ReWild, which runs the East Hampton Compost program in collaboration with the town, will take pumpkins at Amber Waves Farm in Amagansett from 8 a.m. to noon.

Working with East Hampton Town, Balsam Farms, and the town's recycling center, and with help from East Hampton High School interns, ReWild has composted more than 8,000 pounds of food scraps this year.
