The girls track and field team won its first home meet handily, beating Comsewogue 101-37 on March 25 and placing first in 13 of 16 events.
In the triple jump, Lucia Mogavero took first place, reaching 31 feet, 2.5 inches. C.J. Echavarria won the 100-meter high hurdles in 17.5 seconds, and Sophia Figueroa was right behind her, finishing second in 17.8 seconds. Sierra Stumpf came in third, in 19.0.
Laura Martinez won the 1,500 meters in 5:15.9. In the 400 meters, Sara O’Brien won in 63.0 seconds, with Maggie Greenwald in second in 67.2.
Leah McCarron won the 100 meters in 13.0 seconds. Vicky Chen took third with a 13.8, and nine other girls tried the event for the first time: Lai’la Sanders (14.0), Emily Alvarez (14.7), Merritt Bistrian-Emptage (15.2), Alexis Salazar (15.4), Ashlyn O’Donnell (15.7), Abby Bermeo (16.1), Amy Fleming (16.4), Madison Williams (17.5), and Madison Giraldo (19.2).
Bennett Greene ran away with the 1,500-meter race walk, finishing first in 8:50.4. Olivia Stiglitz came in second in 9:19.0, and Chelsea Fromm finished third in 9:50.7.
In the 800 meters, Josie Mott won in 2:42.2. Danette Gonzalez-Alcala came in third, finishing in 2:47.0.
Figueroa set a personal record in the 200 meters, finishing in 29.4 second, good for second place. Mogavero came in third, just three-tenths of a second later at 29.7. Six other girls tried the distance for the first time: Alvarez (31.1), Salazar (31.5), Bistrian-Emptage (32.5), O’Donnell (33.3), Angela Mantilla (35.1), and Williams (38.2).
In the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, O’Brien finished first in 70.7, Greenwald came in second in 76.0, and Kate Vinski took third in 87.3. Martinez finished second in the 3,000 meters with a 13:25.1.
McCarron won the long jump, hitting 15 feet, 6 inches. Stumpf took third, at 14 feet, 10.5 inches, and finished second in the high jump, reaching 4 feet, 6 inches. Lilly Wood-Savarese came in third, clearing 4 feet 4 inches.
McCarron’s winning shot-put throw went for 29 feet, 9 inches. Sabina Piecyk took second place with 25 feet, 1 inch. It was her first time competing in the event. McCarron also won the discus, with a throw of 90 feet, 2 inches. Lucy Knight placed third, sending the disc 70 feet.
In the pole vault, Chen won, reaching 8 feet. Angie Castillo took second place, clearing 6 feet.
In the 4-by-100-meter relay, Bonac Team A — Chen, Mogavero, Figueroa, and Echavarria — won in 54.4.
On to Longwood
Yani Cuesta, Bonac’s head coach, called the home meet “a great start to the season,” adding that she can’t wait to see how the girls improve. She didn’t have to wait long, with the girls braving the cold to compete at the Longwood Invitational in Middle Island on March 28, where they set several personal records.
In the 100-meter high hurdles, Echavarria took third place with a 17.0 season best. Vinski set a personal record of 22.06.
Among distance runners, Martinez took third place in the 1,500 meters, finishing in 5:20.05.
In the 100 meters, Sky Goulart hit a season best 14.95. Alvarez set a personal record of 14.70, Bistrian-Emptage set a P.R. of 15.06, Lilly Wood-Savarese ran a season’s best 15.13, Salazar set a P.R. of 15.16, Fleming set a personal record of 15.69, Bermeo set a P.R. of 16.01, Flora Jiang ran a season’s best 16.92, and Williams set a personal record of 17.65.
In the 400 meters, Mott ran a season’s best 65.89, which put her in third place. Shirley Jiang also ran a season’s best, in 74.89.
In the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, O’Brien took fourth place with a 72.18. Figueroa finished in 77.15, her best of the season. Greene also achieved a season’s best of 88.94.
Back to sprints, in the 200 meters Echavarria ran a season’s best 29.83, Bistrian-Emptage set a personal record of 32.10, and Shirley Jiang ran a season’s best 33.05.
The 4-by-100-meter relay team — Wood-Savarese, Alvarez, Salazar, and Sanders — finished in fifth place with a 63.61. In the sprint medley relay, Team A of O’Brien, Echavarria, Mogavero, and Martinez took second place, with a 4:40.99 finish. Team B — Mott, Chen, Powers, and Greenwald — finished third, in 5:01.71.
As for field events, McCarron threw a season’s best 31 feet in the shot-put. That was good enough for fourth place. She took fifth place in the discus with a toss of 83 feet, 4 inches. Also in the discus, Fleming threw a personal record of 58 feet, 1 inch. Bermeo threw a P.R. of 54 feet, 10 inches. Flora Jiang threw a season’s best 51 feet, 5 inches, and Giraldo threw a personal best of 41 feet, 8 inches.
In the long jump, Stumpf set a personal record of 15 feet, 4.75 inches. In the triple jump, Mogavero came in sixth place with a season’s best 31 feet, 5.5 inches. Stephania Cano came in 10th place with a season’s best 28 feet, 8 inches. Angela Mantilla set a new P.R. of 25 feet, 4.75 inches.
In the high jump, Stumpf hit 4 feet, 6 inches for sixth place, Wood-Savarese hit a personal record at that height for seventh place, and Goulart finished ninth with a 4-foot-6 season’s best.
Chen took third place in the pole vault, reaching 8 feet. Castillo came in sixth with a season’s best of 7 feet.
The girls will have some time off from competition over spring break, returning to the track for the Port Jefferson Steeplefest on April 8.
