The East Hampton High School boys indoor track team started working on its relays and it’s already paying off. At the second meet of the season last Saturday at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood, the 4-by-800-meter relay team took second place to Smithtown West with a time of 8:50.4. That was the fourth-fastest finish in Section XI.

The track coach, Kevin Barry, called Sean Perez, Watts Comly-Bolick, Marcus Oransky, and Jasper Samuelson’s performance a highlight for Bonac. With a bit more practice, he expects that relay team to be one of the best in the county.

“Assistant coach Nick DeLuca and I are really pleased with all of the boys’ performances,” Barry said. “Especially since the weather has made it difficult to work outside.”

Oransky came back in the 55-meter hurdles and ran a personal record of 9.28 seconds for fourth place.

Emmett Schumann, a freshman, won the freshman-sophomore 600 meters in 1:36.6.

Samuelson, a sophomore, tried the freshman-sophomore 300 meters for the first time and won the event in 40.2 seconds.

And Leo Mogavero, an eighth grader, ran a 5:50.63 in the freshman-sophomore 1,600 meters, a personal best that put him in ninth place out of a field of 18.

In the field events, Eduardo Calle took fourth place in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 8.5 inches, followed by Nelvin Suchite with a jump of 18 feet.

The 4-by-200-meter relay team — Suchite, Schumann, Alex Cabrera, and Calle — also finished in fourth with a time of 1:43.1. Barry called it a great race.

“We are way ahead of where we were last year. The boys are really coming together as a team. Christmas break is going to be key. If we can keep improving, we should have our highest finish at the league championships in January.”
