He Swerved to Avoid a Deer

Thu, 07/16/2026 - 09:07

An East Hampton driver who told police he was trying to avoid a deer on Montauk Highway was taken to the emergency room last week after his Hyundai sedan collided with a utility pole and overturned.

At around 11:30 p.m. on July 7, Anyelo Aristizabal Caceres, 24, was headed east near the traffic light at Brent’s in Amagansett, when the animal suddenly appeared in his headlights, he said, and he swerved onto the shoulder to avoid a collision. The car struck a wooden utility pole by the side of the road, knocking it down, and then flipped over onto its roof.

The driver was taken by ambulance to the Stony Brook East Hampton emergency building after complaining of shoulder pain. The car, which sustained significant damage to its front passenger side and roof, was collected by Joe’s Towing and Recovery.

The eastbound lane of Montauk Highway was temporarily shut down between Skimhampton Road and Abraham’s Path while PSEG responded to remove the fallen pole. The report did not say whether the deer survived.
