No Signals and No Stopping

Thu, 04/23/2026 - 09:19

Police charged a Riverhead woman with a felony in the early hours of Sunday morning after they said they found her to be intoxicated with two children in the car in Amagansett.

Kelly V. Guerrero-Merlos, 28, was charged with two felony driving-while-intoxicated counts related to Leandra’s Law because the children in the car were under the age of 16. The children, ages 6 and 9, were unrestrained in the rear seat, police said. They were uninjured, and family members were able to pick them up from town police headquarters in Wainscott.

Ms. Guerrero-Merlos had been stopped in a Chevy Blazer after she allegedly sped up, ran a stop sign, moved unsafely from her lane, and failed to use turn signals. She was additionally charged with improper restraints for both children and consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle, all violations of traffic law.

Also on the Amagansett roads, an East Hampton man was charged with misdemeanor D.W.I. on April 11 after he crashed the car he was driving on Accabonac Highway near Stony Hill Road at 1 that morning.

According to a report, the man was headed north when he crossed over into the oncoming lane and crashed into a telephone pole. Police said they found him walking along the road. He told them he had swerved to avoid a deer.
