Felony Arrests, One Night After Another

Town police made two similar felony-level arrests for drunken driving last week, one on Main Street in Montauk and the other in East Hampton.

Carlos H. Alvarado-Villacorta of Southampton, 38, was stopped on the night of Oct. 12 near South Eagle Street after an officer spotted his gray Honda headed east in “total darkness,” with no taillights or plate lamp illuminated. The car crossed the double yellow lines several times before swerving back into its lane, according to the report, before being pulled over. The driver demonstrated known signs of intoxication, the officer said, and consented to a breathalyzer test, which produced a blood-alcohol reading over twice the legal limit. A subsequent search of his record revealed a 2017 conviction for driving while intoxicated.

He was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters in Wainscott, where he spent the rest of the night in a holding cell. In the morning, he appeared in Town Justice Court before Justice Steven Tekulsky, who released him on his own recognizance with an order to return to court at 11 a.m. on Nov. 5.

Much the same story happened the following night, starting on Old Northwest Road, where police reported that Jaime R. Yocvelasquez, 43, had failed to maintain his lane of travel, first crossing over solid white lines and then ignoring Do Not Enter traffic signs and driving in the wrong direction on Old Northwest. Police stopped him near Cedar Street and said he appeared intoxicated; he too consented to a breathalyzer test that also produced a reading over twice the legal limit. A computer check turned up a 2022 conviction for D.W.I., raising the charges to the felony level because it occurred within the past 10 years.

Mr. Yocvelasquez, too, spent the night at Wainscott headquarters and was arraigned before Justice Tekulsky in the morning. Released on his own recognizance, he is expected back in court on — no surprise — Nov. 5.

Volunteers Answer the Call of Duty

“No one wants to get out of bed, having just climbed in. And it’s a really cold night, and it’s windy, and everything else — but you know that everyone else will be feeling the same, and so you go anyway. Everyone jumps in their cars and drives there, and then you deal with whatever is going on.”
