High summer, with its attendant apocalyptic traffic and legion of flustered motorists, hit its stride this week as numerous vehicular accidents were logged by police. Victims included a tree, a deer, a utility pole, and a shopping cart. On the bright side, the human toll was negligible.
Tracey Ann Josephs-Lee of Montauk was driving a 2019 Hyundai on Old Stone Highway in Springs early Sunday afternoon when she swerved to avoid a deer and hit two trees. Ms. Josephs-Lee was treated for minor arm injuries at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and released.
Paul Campanella of East Hampton was riding his bicycle on Newtown Lane near the intersection of Barns Lane in East Hampton Village on Friday afternoon when Michael Diack of Woodmere opened the driver’s-side door of his parked 2020 BMW S.U.V. Mr. Campanella plowed into the door. No injuries were reported, however.
Michael Hoffman of Brooklyn told East Hampton Village police he was “in a rush” when he pulled his 2020 Chrysler S.U.V. out of the parking lot at 74 Montauk Highway around noon last Thursday and hit a parked Rivian pickup truck owned by Mark Smith of East Hampton. Both vehicles sustained damage.
On Friday around 4 p.m., Nery Lainez-Cedeno of Bayonne, N.J., was southbound in a Freightliner work van on Old Stone Highway near Abram’s Landing Road in Amagansett when he fell asleep and rear-ended a 2015 Tesla driven by Caliopi Kokolakis of Mount Sinai.
Lisheng Ren of Brooklyn said he was making an abrupt left U-turn in downtown Montauk when his 2019 Toyota crashed into a 2021 Buick S.U.V. driven by Lisa Brunjes of Bohemia. The Montauk Highway collision took place on the afternoon of July 13, near South Emery Street.
David Carlson was trying to leave the shoulder and merge into traffic on Montauk Highway in his U.S. Postal Service vehicle on July 13 at 8 p.m. when he hit Rosa Ayala’s 1990 Acura. The Acura then struck a Verizon utility pole near Jericho Road in East Hampton Village. There were no reports of injuries.
A shopping cart was the culprit in a July 12 accident on Montauk Highway, again near Abram’s Landing Road in Amagansett. Andrew Cogan of New York City was driving a 2022 Bentley convertible just after 5 p.m. when he struck the cart, which had somehow made its way into the westbound lane. No injuries were reported, but the Bentley did sustain damage to its front end.
Carole Gaunt of Naples, Fla., was headed west on Montauk Highway and trying to turn left onto Wainscott Northwest Road in Wainscott on the evening of July 12, when her 2015 Bentley sedan hit the rear driver’s side of Norvin Bonilla-Rodriguez’s eastbound 2020 Dodge pickup, causing more than $1,000 in damage. No injuries were reported.
Martha Brown of Hillsboro Beach, Fla., driving a 2022 Toyota rental on Montauk Highway in East Hampton on July 11, hit a deer near the Skimhampton Road turnoff.
Finally, Stephanie Bogetti of Brielle, N.J., said a car parked on Montauk Highway obstructed her view as she tried to pull out of the Citgo gas station in Montauk in the early afternoon of July 11. Her 2014 Jeep collided with a 2021 Honda driven by Neal Parikh of New York City.
