Thu, 05/14/2026 - 12:18

A head-on collision on Montauk Highway by the Amagansett railroad crossing last Thursday morning left four people injured.

According to East Hampton Town police, the accident happened at 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Abram’s Landing Road, when a sedan attempting to make a left from the highway collided with a van headed west.

The sedan driver, Fernando Piña Atariguana of Riverhead, 25, told police that he’d misjudged the turning lane and driven into the westbound lane instead, causing the collision.

Luis Quichimbo of Montauk, 56, the driver of the van, was not hurt, but both his front and back-seat passengers were. Angel Tacuri Baculima, 49, who was riding in front, complained of neck pain; Mauricio Guzman Navarro, 28, who was in the back, had facial bruises and pain. Both were taken by ambulance to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.

Mr. Piña Atariguana said he had back pain, and his front-seat passenger, Odalis Toledo Ruiz, 25, said her arm had been injured. They too were taken to the hospital by ambulance for treatment.

Mr. Piña Atariguana was ticketed for driving without a license and driving with a suspended license, both violations.

The van sustained substantial damage to its front end. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
