Bad Crash in Amagansett

A Friday night motorcycle crash on Bluff Road in Amagansett sent one person to the hospital and another to court.

Robert Chase Plachy of Amagansett, 31, was eastbound on a Honda motorcycle, near the East Hampton Town Marine Museum, when he lost control of the vehicle at about 10:45 p.m.    

East Hampton Town police said in a statement that Mr. Plachy's passenger, Nicole Greenwood of California, 35, who was not wearing a helmet at the time, was thrown from the motorcycle and suffered "serious physical injuries."

Ms. Greenwood was taken by a county helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, which listed her in critical condition as of Friday night. No further information was available as of press time.

Mr. Plachy, whom police charged with driving while intoxicated, sustained minor injuries. He was arraigned on Saturday morning before East Hampton Town Justice Steven Tekulsky, who released him on his own recognizance to await a future court date.

Neighbors reported that police crime tape blocking nearby Atlantic Avenue was still there at of 7:30 a.m. Saturday as the investigation continued.

A 37-year-old Montauk man attempted to make a fire in a barrel at the Montauk Skate Park to "grill some burgers while he and friends skated" on the afternoon of March 13. Someone called the police, who told the man it was against the rules. He apologized and put the fire out.

In 2023, for 911 calls classified as "highest priority," the East Hampton Town Police Department's average response time was 5 minutes, 38 seconds. Officers made 163 drunken-driving arrests, assisted on 2,530 medical calls and nearly 1,800 fire-related emergencies, and logged 12 "use of force" incidents over the 12-month period. Those were just a few of the statistics presented by Chief Michael Sarlo to the East Hampton Town Board last week, capping off a year of protecting 70 square miles from Wainscott to Montauk.
