Police Seek Information on July 12 Attack in Amagansett

Fri, 07/23/2021 - 14:27

East Hampton Town detectives are conducting an active investigation into an attack, on the evening of July 12, of a local man who was assaulted in the parking lot of Amagansett Square.

Kenneth Kalbacher, 61, of Cove Hollow Road, East Hampton, was riding a bicycle on his way to the Stephen Talkhouse at about 8:30 p.m. when, at the Mobil gas station off Indian Wells Highway, he got into a verbal altercation with four unknown men. The group apparently followed him as he was stowing the bike away near Vinnie's barbershop, and beat him severely about the face and head.

The redacted police report noted that Mr. Kalbacher believed "he was struck with a wooden billy club," causing an orbital eye socket fracture and a broken nose, as later determined by Stony Brook University Hospital's intensive care unit.

Police established a crime scene, searched the area, and spoke to an Amagansett resident who witnessed the attack, but the assailants remain at large as of press time. Anyone with information has been encouraged to call police; all information will be held in confidence.
