Exiting From the Entrance

Thu, 07/02/2020 - 11:12

There was an accident in the parking lot of the Red Horse complex in East Hampton Village on Friday night as Richard Randall of Charlotte, N.C., was trying to exit to the right, onto Montauk Highway, where the sign says entrance only. A 2014 Mercedes sedan driven by C. Hirsch Gedinsky of New York City was entering the lot and struck the passenger side of Mr. Randall’s 2003 Mercedes.

There was damage to both cars. Mr. Randall told East Hampton Town police that Mr. Gedinsky, who reported chest pains from whiplash but declined medical attention, had been “driving aggressively” around a third car.

Graham Herbert of Bay Shore was driving a 2015 Audi full of people in East Hampton Village on the afternoon of June 22 when he smashed into a 2017 Ford van driven by Brian Scott of Shirley. The van was propelled into Marguerite Wetzel’s 2019 Toyota, which was stopped in the crosswalk to let a pedestrian pass.

Mr. Herbert claimed not to have seen the cars ahead of him. Three of his passengers sustained injuries. Don Lee and Joseph Rhodes complained of leg pain, and Ronald Brown had minor bleeding to his eye. Mr. Scott, the van driver, had back pain, and Ms. Wetzel, who lives in Montauk, had whiplash. None required medical attention, however. The Audi was towed from the scene by Rapid Recovery Towing.

Catherine Lewry of Smithtown, 21, was sitting in traffic on Montauk Highway at the Wainscott Northwest Road light last week when a 2014 Mack truck belonging to Landscape Details Inc. rear-ended her 2018 Kia sedan. The truck driver, Matthew Cuomo of East Hampton, 30, told town police he could not stop in time. Both the front of the truck and the back of the car, where Ms. Lewry’s 11-year-old passenger was sitting, were damaged. The child had some symptoms of a concussion but did not require medical attention at the scene.

Volunteers Answer the Call of Duty

“No one wants to get out of bed, having just climbed in. And it’s a really cold night, and it’s windy, and everything else — but you know that everyone else will be feeling the same, and so you go anyway. Everyone jumps in their cars and drives there, and then you deal with whatever is going on.”
