Witnesses Disputed His Story

A Hyundai sedan overturned Monday morning after striking a landscaping truck on Toilsome Lane, injuring the Hyundai’s driver.

Peter J. Harty of East Hampton, 72, told East Hampton Village police that he was headed north on the lane when the truck, which is registered to the Laurel Group, a Huntington landscaping firm, pulled out in front of him, causing him to sideswipe the truck’s attached trailer.

Several witnesses disputed his account, stating that the truck had been parked, and that equipment was being unloaded at the time of the collision. An officer observed upon arrival that the truck was parked on the side of the road, as the witnesses stated, and that traffic cones had been positioned around the work area.

Mr. Harty complained of elbow pain and was transported by police ambulance to Stony Brook University Hospital, according to the accident report. His car sustained significant front-end and roof damage, and was towed from the scene.
