Asleep at the Wheel While on the Road

Thu, 01/16/2020 - 09:50

A 52-year-old East Hampton man was found sleeping behind the wheel of his car at about 12:25 p.m. on Jan. 3, according to East Hampton Town police. Christopher R. Card was passed out on Spring Close Highway near Town Lane with the keys in the ignition of his 2013 Toyota sedan, police said.

He appeared intoxicated, said the report, and his blood alcohol test at headquarters produced a reading of .18 or more. He was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor. Police also found he had been driving with a suspended or revoked license.

Mr. Card was held throughout the day and overnight for a morning arraignment in East Hampton Town Justice Court, after which he was released. While new state bail reform laws do not allow for monetary bail to be set where D.W.I. charges are involved, defendants are held in such cases so that judges can suspend their driving privileges.

On Friday, town police also arrested a Springs man on a misdemeanor D.W.I. charge. Bauer Santizo-Escalante, 25, was driving a 1998 Honda sedan with Florida license plates north on Springs-Fireplace Road, near North Main Street in East Hampton, at about 12:15 a.m., when he reportedly crossed over the white fog line. He was pulled over and appeared intoxicated, the report said.

Mr. Escalante was freed later that morning following arraignment before Justice Steve Tekulsky.
