Seven Vehicles Strike Deer

Many deer-related accidents kept the East Hampton Town Police Department busy last week. No injuries, accept perhaps to the deer, resulted. Six of the collisions occurred in Montauk.

Reported in chronological order, the accidents began on Oct. 16. Jeanne M. Shelton of Southampton told police that while heading north on Route 114 near Hilltop Lane in East Hampton at around 4:40 p.m., a deer came out in front of her and she did not have enough time to stop before colliding with it. The front of the vehicle was damaged. 

A similar collision occurred the following night at around 6:30. Ellyn F. Stosuy of Farmington, Conn., was traveling north on Flamingo Avenue near Culloden Place in Montauk, when she struck a deer on the roadway. The front driver’s side of her 2007 Toyota suburban was damaged. 

The driver of a 2014 Mercedes van, Cesar A. Acosta of Southampton, struck a deer on Oct. 18 at around 6:20 a.m. He was westbound on Montauk Highway near Beech Street in Montauk when the accident occurred. The driver’s side of the Mercedes was damaged.

At or near the same location on Saturday, Edwin V. Sarangovacacela of East Hampton, who was traveling east at the intersection of Montauk Highway and Beech Street in Montauk, collided with a deer at around 8:15 p.m. According to police, neither Mr. Sarangovacacela nor his passenger, Luz M. Tene-Guaillas, was injured, but the 2017 Toyota, which sustained front damage, had to be towed from the scene.

Last Thursday at around 6:50 p.m., Francis J. Murray of Baiting Hollow hit a deer while eastbound on Old Montauk Highway near Cedar Street in Montauk.  Damage occurred to the front passenger side of Mr. Murray’s 2014 Jeep.

On Friday, Douglas B. Sadler of Easton, N.Y., struck a deer on Montauk Highway near Cemetery Road in Montauk. Police responded at around 6:30 p.m. Mr. Sadler’s 1997 Volkswagen had front-end damage. 

At around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, the driver of a 2015 Mitsubishi struck a deer on Montauk Highway near Shipwreck Drive on Napeague. East Hampton Town police reported that Jose G. Ramirez of Amagansett had three passengers in his car, none of whom were injured. Due to damage on the front passenger side of the vehicle, it was towed

Guilty Plea in T.C.O. Harassment Case

Maura Davis Gropper, the 67-year-old East Hampton woman who was accused in May of driving her car into two teenage traffic control officers in Sag Harbor, pleaded guilty to a single count of second-degree harassment, a violation, and was ordered to pay a fine.
