A Motorcyclist Speeds Off

Thu, 05/23/2019 - 06:26

East Hampton Village police spotted a motorcyclist speeding on Sunday morning, but instead of stopping, the motorcyclist took off, passing several cars, until he eventually stopped in Sagaponack.

Police said Eddie Diaz, 31, of Corona, Queens, was riding his Yamaha at 63 miles per hour in a 30-m.p.h. zone on Main Street around 9:15 a.m. Officer Theodore Pharaoh put on his emergency lights and sirens, but Mr. Diaz did not stop, instead speeding away headed west.

Officer Pharaoh saw the motorcyclist pass several cars across the double yellow lines on Main Street, near the intersection with Mill Hill Lane, and then pass a dump truck at the intersection of Woods and Toilsome Lanes.

For safety reasons, Officer Pharaoh decided against chasing the Yamaha and notified East Hampton Town and Southampton Town police to be on the lookout for it. East Hampton Town police spotted him on Montauk Highway, and he pulled over in front of the Old Stove Pub in Sagaponack.

Mr. Diaz was placed under arrest and charged with two counts of reckless driving and one count of unlawfully fleeing a police officer in the third degree, which are misdemeanors, as well as two counts of speeding, improperly passing, and driving to the left in a no-passing zone, all traffic infractions.

East Hampton Town Justice Lisa R. Rana arraigned Mr. Diaz on Monday. He was released on $500 bail. The motorcycle was impounded.
