Arrested, Asleep at the Wheel

A Springs woman was charged Saturday morning with driving while intoxicated after East Hampton Town police reported finding her near her house, “passed out” behind the steering wheel of her 2014 Jeep with the car in drive and her foot on the brake.

Paloma J. Tavera, 23, was asleep when an officer came upon the Jeep, on Lincoln Avenue at the intersection of Norfolk Street, just after 6:30 a.m. The officer woke her up and reported that there was a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on her breath and she appeared drunk. 

She was charged with misdemeanor D.W.I. an hour later. Justice Lisa R. Rana arraigned her in East Hampton Town Justice Court later that morning and released her on her own recognizance with instructions to be back in court at a future date.

On Saturday night at 11, Cory A. Pawlukojc of East Hampton, 25, was arrested on the same charge. He was driving a 2013 Ford, heading north on Springs-Fireplace Road near North Main Street, when police saw the car swerve into the oncoming lane. According to their report, he crossed the double yellow lines three times.

Mr. Pawlukojc was held overnight for a morning arraignment. Justice Rana released him on his own recognizance. 

A 17-year-old from Springs was arrested on misdemeanor marijuana charges on Oct. 14, police said this week. His name was withheld because he is eligible for youthful offender status. 

According to a report, two ounces of marijuana were found in two large plastic bags in his 2011 Volkswagen during an investigation at Indian Wells Beach in Amagansett just after 9 p.m. The report did not indicate what led to the search. 

The young man was charged with criminal possession of marijuana in the fourth degree. A sergeant released him on his own recognizance that night. He is due to appear in Justice Court on Nov. 15. T.K.V.

A 67-year-old East Hampton woman accused of driving her car into two teenage traffic control officers in Sag Harbor Village on May 17 pleaded not guilty to four charges — endangering the welfare of a child, harassment in the second degree, leaving the scene of an accident, and reckless endangerment — when she was arraigned Friday in front of Village Justice Carl Irace.
