OVERHEARD: The 'In' Crowd

Just how damn crowded is it, anyway? Spoiler alert: No one actually knows! If the flawed 2020 census were correct, our population would only be about that of the town of Aberdeen, South Dakota, but if the town planning department is correct, East Hampton in summertime is somewhere between New Haven, Connecticut, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Portuguese Man-o-War Spotted on Amagansett Beach

Be alert: Portuguese man-o-wars sport a transparent float that looks like a clear dumpling or empanada, below which dangle long stinging tentacles that can grow anywhere from 30 to 100 feet long. "If they're on the beach, then they're in the water," said the town's chief lifeguard, who guessed that the creatures came in with strong south swells associated with storms passing off the Island earlier in the week.

Springs Food Pantry Benefit

A Springs note in the June 29 print edition of The Star gave an incorrect date for E.A.T. in the Hidden Gardens, a benefit for the Springs Food Pantry. It will take place on July 8 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Corbett Estate at 464 Old Stone Highway.

While touring the maze-like gardens, guests can enjoy live music, wine from Wolffer Estate Vineyard, draft beer from Springs Brewery, hors d'oeuvres from Silver Spoon Specialties (the People Choice winner at the food pantry's 2023 Chili Chowdown), and mocktails by Cocktails & Dreams.
