Close Calls at Sea

    Amagansett

    December 15, 2013

To the Editor,

As one dragger captain said, “We all have had our close calls at sea.”

The morning Billy and I left the dock on Billy the Kid to join the search for John from the Anna Mary is a day none of us will ever forget. Every boat has its own story to tell. When you are looking for someone in the ocean it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack. The debris out there — balloons, garbage — every little thing catches your eye.

Ned’s Still With Us

    Springs

    December 6, 2013

Dear Editor:

I was delighted to see the town’s nature preserve committee is trying to preserve the remains and honor of “Ned, Faithful negro manservant of Capt. Jeremiah Osborn.”

Back in 2009, the nature preserve committee was tasked with finding and documenting every known cemetery and gravesite in East Hampton Town.

Profound Loss and Love

    Barnes Landing

    November 25, 2013

Dear David,

It is five months since our 14-year-old daughter, Anna Mirabai, was run over and killed on her bike near CVS in East Hampton. Not a day goes by, and rarely an hour, when she is not present in our thoughts and feelings, feelings of profound loss and great love.

Rookie Head Coach

    East Hampton

    November 14, 2013

Dear Editor,

I would like to say congratulations to Steve Redlus, the varsity “rookie” head coach of the E.H.H.S. football team. He took our high school football team to the playoffs this year. I have never heard of a rookie head coach doing this before. Our team did very well in spite of our record. The team and coaches helped each other to get ready for the games each week.

Thank You All

    Springs

    November 10, 2013

Dear David,

It was a long campaign but, for me, thankfully, very worthwhile. I am happy to have won a seat on our town board and I’d like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all of the East Hampton voters who took time out of their day to go to the polls and vote for me.

To Serve All People

    East Hampton

    November 5, 2013

Dear David,

I want to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone for the warm and generous reception I have received as a candidate for supervisor.

When I announced my intention to run seven months ago I fully expected a competitive campaign. Even though this did not occur, I have worked hard attending many public events, campaigning in public places and in candidate forums.

Those Who Helped

    Amagansett

    October 25, 2013

Dear Mr. Rattray:

As your paper reported earlier this month, the East Hampton Town Trustees held the 23rd annual Largest Clam Contest on Sunday, Oct. 6. This year’s event was exceptionally well attended and, we believe, enjoyable for all participants and spectators.

To the Editor:

Necrotizing fasciitis, also called flesh-eating disease, is a life-threatening skin infection that according to the Centers for Disease Control, and in reviews of various studies, has a fatality rate of 25 to 35 percent.

Loss of Beach

    Montauk

    October 13, 2013

Dear Editor,

I was relieved to see your editorial regarding the proposal to armor and replenish the beach in Montauk. The Army Corps’s proposal has the potential to waste a lot of taxpayer money, but more important for local residents, it has the potential to destroy any possibility of having a sandy beach in Montauk.

Falsely Accused

    Amagansett

    October 12, 2013

Dear Mr. Rattray,

Regarding Jason Gutterman’s letter (Oct. 10), in response to my own, in the last issue of The Star, I believe he is as bad a writer as he is a disgrace to the reputation of the School of Visual Arts.

Mr. Gutterman offers a tired rehash of some of my past reversals and egregious public missteps. I would like to address just one. In February of this year, a New York Post photographer accused me of calling him a racial epithet.

Always There for Us

    East Hampton

    October 2, 2013

Dear Editor,

Recently, for the third time in the 36 years I have lived in East Hampton, I had to call on the emergency services of our volunteer ambulance corps, and for the third time in 36 years, I found them efficient, professional, caring, and consoling.
