September 5, 2019
Dear David,
East Hampton Meals on Wheels . . . Yes, well, it’s not just the excellent service they provide but the outstanding, caring service. I cannot write enough about how wonderful these people are and what they mean to this 85-year-old lady.

Gratitude
Amagansett
August 26, 2019
Dear David,
I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone in the community who turned out at the Stephen Talkhouse and donated to help raise money for me on Aug. 18. The funds will help me take care of medical bills and help me throughout my recovery.
From the bottom of my heart, I thank you.
With love,
Fireworks Show
East Hampton
August 10, 2019
To the Editor,
With yet another summer season coming to a close, it’s time to indulge in one of our community’s most beloved summer traditions — the East Hampton Fire Department’s annual Main Beach fireworks show. This year’s show will be held this Saturday, Aug. 17, with a rain date of Sunday, the 18th.

Dear David,
On behalf of my sisters, Louise and Alice, I would like to thank Tony Littman and the East Hampton Town Parks Department for creating a new and more beautiful Terry King Ball Field sign after the original one had fallen into disrepair.

July 26, 2019
Dear David:
I am just reading your editorial in this week’s East Hampton Star about the poor customer services at Optimum during an outage and entitled “Optimum Outrage.” In it you state, “The internet outage also underlined how miserable cell service is on the East End, and how thin it is, stretched by the population explosion in the summer.”

Dear East Hampton Star,
A little known but wonderful charity, East End 4 Ecuador, is finally closing because it has finished making its financial contributions and because many of its founders have now joined charities that concentrate their work in East Hampton.

Dear Editor:
A terrible tragedy occurred here in Montauk this week. Twin little girls were murdered and their mother is accused.
Box Turtles

June 21, 2019
To the Editor:
Thank you for the “Guestwords” on box turtles. Box turtles inhabit my property on the northwest corner of the intersection of Wainscott Hollow Road and Wainscott Main Street. I have encountered three so far this year including the one that came by today. They range from eight inches to two feet.
Several letters to the editor concerning the Tuesday, June 25, Democratic primary did not make the print edition of the newspaper. Read them here now and, registered East Hampton Democrats, you can still get out to vote before 9 p.m. today.

Dear David,
Does everyone in East Hampton think that the heart of America is good, but the head of America (and I don’t mean Trump) is not so good? If you disagree, then I would humbly request you to listen to Mother Angelica, Jan. 3, 1995, on EWTN.
Very Pleasant
East Hampton
June 10, 2019
Dear David:
This past weekend I rediscovered that it can actually be fun, relaxing, and a friendly experience when an East End town is crowded with vacationers.
On Saturday, I visited Westhampton Beach. I was thrilled to find that it hasn’t changed much since I was a kid 60-plus years ago. I easily parked my car without its being immediately marked as a potential violator of time limitations as would have happened in East Hampton Village.
Purple Pearl
Santa Fe, N.M.
June 1, 2019
Dear David,
Word has come to Santa Fe about a precious purple pearl that was discovered housed in a clam in Bonac. I suspect the price of a clamming license has skyrocketed as a consequence. I’ll be inspecting my clams more carefully.
I’m considering quitting my day job as a contractor and investing in the newfound discovery. Say, how much is a clam rake nowadays? This could turn into wall-to-wall clammers.
Summer Is Here
Amagansett
May 26, 2019
Dear David,
As the traffic thickened this past week it seemed like the normal rhythm of an East Hampton summer starting. However I sense something more pernicious in the air. The first hint was evident when I slowed down near Red Horse on Friday to let some poor soul make a left turn and suddenly I was barraged by a horn blaring from a car which went to my right to pass and came within inches of smashing into said poor soul. And they were mad? Shrugging, I looked at my wife and said “summer is here.”
Inappropriate Stuff
Springs
May 20, 2019
Dear Mr. Rattray,
What a delightful and unexpected surprise I had when I went to the Town Hall to renew my dump sticker and was met by several beautiful big photographs of the sea by the artist Jane Martin. I felt transformed. What a pleasant way to wait in line to get a permit, and I couldn’t help but make the connection that recycling, which goes on at the dump, helps keep the ocean beautiful and clean, as shown in the photographs. And I applaud the town for mounting such a beautiful exhibit in this public building.
At Its Best Amagansett May 6, 2019Dear David,It was East Hampton at its best on Saturday night at the Neighborhood House where the community came together to celebrate Cinquo de Mayo. This was the second annual fest, hosted and organized by the East Hampton Democratic Committee for the benefit of Project Most. And what a celebration it was: A full house, toddlers to seniors, from every neighborhood in town. Games for the children, including an Easter egg hunt (which had been rained out) and prizes galore.
From Members East Hampton April 29, 2019To the Editor:I went to the Jewish Center of the Hamptons for a wonderful Passover Seder! On this holiday there is great focus on the children. Rabbi Joshua Franklin and Cantor Debra Stein did a most excellent job! I don’t recall ever being so entertained at a religious ceremony.Debra’s outfits were dazzling, while the rabbi (also adorned in garments of splendor) made the evening festive.
Should Not Rush Spring April 15, 2019Dear David,Thank you for your editorial on why the East Hampton Town Trustees should not rush the adoption of the currently proposed 35-year leases. It is true that the current lease terms need revision. And, there are residents who have lived at Lazy Point for many years who need to be protected with low-priced leases for as long as they wish to stay.
Truly Special Montauk April 3, 2019Dear Editor:I speak for myself, George, my brother, Michael, my sister, Linda, and our entire family when I say thank you, Montauk! We are overwhelmed by the love and generosity that this great community has shown us. Starting with Sam Joyce and Jenni Balcuns for opening up on their day off to feed us at Sammy’s.
A Squeaky Wheel Springs March 27 2019Dear David: It has been an honor to serve our community as president of the Springs Historical Society and Library. The organization is an important part of the community. My election came at a very crucial time considering that the leadership had previously not changed in decades.
Hauntings| Westford, Mass. March 22, 2019Dear Mr. Rattray:I read with great interest the March 21 article about hauntings at, among others, the East Hampton Library. When my mother worked there in the 1960s, she was greeted one night with a most awful sight that made her naturally curly hair stand on end. She never tired of talking about it.It was a teenager voluntarily reading “Silas Marner.”DAVID McDONOUGHDr.
