The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation opened the fluke season on Sunday with two new announcements.

The season for fluke, or summer flounder, will now run through Oct. 9 giving anglers an extra 12 days to catch them, and the minimum size limit has been decreased by half an inch. Recreational fishermen can keep up to four fish, which must now be at least 18.5 inches long.

The changes align with those enacted by the state of Connecticut.

"New York State will continue to work with our coastwide partners to enact conservation measures for summer flounder to ensure an accessible and sustainable fishery for years to come," Commissioner Basil Seggos said in a statement.

Those interested in commenting on the new rules can submit written feedback to the D.E.C. in care of Rachel Sysak, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, 123 Kings Park Boulevard in Kings Park 11754, or by email to [email protected].
