Cable Construction Update

Thu, 03/03/2022 - 12:19

Onshore construction relating to the South Fork Wind farm continues in Wainscott this week with trenching and installation of conduit on Beach Lane and on Wainscott Northwest Road between the Long Island Rail Road intersection and Montauk Highway.

The contractor for the wind farm’s developers is also continuing saw-cutting — shallow cuts made in the roadway to outline the trench area to be opened — along Wainscott Northwest Road, Sayre’s Path, Wainscott Main Street, and Beach Lane, to prepare for the start of excavation.

The wind farm’s export cable is to make landfall at the ocean beach at the end of Beach Lane and travel underground to the Long Island Power Authority substation in East Hampton.

Starting next week, the contractor intends to continue trenching and installing conduit on Beach Lane and on Wainscott Northwest Road between the L.I.R.R. intersection and Montauk Highway.

The developers, Orsted U.S. Offshore Wind and Eversource Energy, have established a hotline and email address for questions about the construction project. They are 631-887-5470 and [email protected].

On the Wing: Dawn Chorus in Spring

The dawn chorus of birdsong is different depending on your habitat, your location, and the time of year. Songbird migration will peak by mid-May. As songbirds migrate overhead during the night, they blanket the sleeping country with sound, calling to each other to keep their flocks together and tight. When they land, they sing us awake.
