A Diner in Sag Harbor
Babe’s diner, originally announced as opening in mid-May, is getting a jump on the season by opening Friday at 51 Division Street in Sag Harbor. While self-described as classic counter-service diner with newspapers on the counter and coffee in steady rotation, produce is drawn from Quail Hill Farm and Balsam Farms, seafood from Braun Seafood Co., and breads and baked goods are sourced locally.
Typical of its refined approach is the bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, with variations ranging from candy bacon to sausage, Taylor ham, pastrami, or no meat at all. Of note is the Steinbeck plate, whose eggs, home fries, and buttery rye toast reference the writer, while a chocolate banana milkshake is a nonalcoholic nod to Cyril’s legendary Baileys Banana Colada. In addition to breakfast fare, sandwiches, burgers, cheesesteaks, fried fish sandwiches, wraps, salads, and a variety of sides are on the menu.
Babe’s will be open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Daytime service will operate on a walk-in basis, with takeout available throughout the day.
Opening
Rita Cantina, the Mexican restaurant in Maidstone Park in Springs, will open for the season Friday at 5 p.m. It will be open at 4 p.m. through Tuesday, Cinco de Mayo, then closed on Wednesday. According to its Instagram page, hours will be Thursdays through Tuesdays, with happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. every day. The kitchen will serve until 10 on Friday and Saturday and until 9 all other days.
Artists and Writers Dinner
The Artists and Writers dinner series at Almond restaurant in Bridgehampton will welcome Molly Gaudry, a writer, who will host the evening on Monday at 7. A three-course family-style meal will be served with a glass of wine or draft beer for $55 plus tax and gratuity. Reservations are required and can be made online or by calling the restaurant at 631-537-5665.
Gaudry is the author of the verse novel “We Take Me Apart,” which was a finalist for the Asian American Literary Awards for poetry and shortlisted for the PEN/Osterweil Award for Poetry. Other publications are “Desire: A Haunting,” a sequel to “We Take Me Apart,” and “Fit Into Me: A Novel: A Memoir.” She is an assistant professor of creative writing, film, and TV at Stony Brook University and teaches fiction during summers at the Yale Writers’ Workshop.
