Pizza at Cedar Point

While many food spots are winding down at this time of year, a new one at Cedar Point County Park in East Hampton’s Northwest Woods is just getting going. Love Cedar Point, which operates the glamping and camp store concession at the park, has just opened the Sunset Shack, an open-air beer and wine bar with a wood-fired pizza oven.

Picnic tables outside or in the covered area offer front-row seats for sunsets over Northwest Harbor, and the pizza is the real deal. Last weekend, Doug Biviano, who owns Love Cedar Point, was manning the pizza oven himself, turning out nine varieties of Neapolitan-style pies with dough made from a finely-ground Italian-style flour known for producing the best thin-crust pizzas.

Along with the traditional 12-inch margherita, cheese, and pepperoni pies, the menu includes one with arugula and peppers, a white pizza with rosemary, garlic, and pepper flakes, another with arugula and prosciutto, and mushroom, jalapeno, and chorizo pies. Most cost $14. A pie with a 16-ounce draft beer will set you back $16, and a pizza with a glass of wine is $20.

The spot will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from 4 to 9 p.m. through Columbus Day weekend.

Winning Desserts

Speaking of pie, Jim Lubetkin of Amagansett, famous around these parts for his dessert pies, has once again won top honors for his submissions to the culinary competition at the New York State Fair in Syracuse. Mr. Lubetkin entered 13 categories over eight days and won eight first-place ribbons, one third, and four honorable mentions. Plus, he reports, “on three of those days, I was awarded a Star of the Day for the single best entry that day across all categories.”

Winning first place and Star of the Day awards were his angel food cake roll with strawberry buttercream filling on Practically Homemade Day, his almond cloud cookie on Cookie Day, and his French apple frangipane tart with an apricot glaze entered on New York State Apple Day.

He also took first place for a raspberry-filled hazelnut linzer cookie on Cookie Day, a lemon layer cake with lemon curd filling and lemon buttercream icing on Cake Day, a Parisian summer berry tart with an apricot glaze on Pie Day, a bittersweet chocolate raspberry tart on Chocolate Day, and a Southern sweet potato quick bread with candied pecans on Bread Day.
